What does this do that the ID-52 doesn't do?

I believe it is pretty similar except it has a mono LCD display and doesn't do picture message displaying.

One thing that bugs me about this is that, much like my 52, the Icom soft case does not fit the radio when the BP-307 is fitted which seems like a daft choice.

This is a price point move to attract buyers to DStar who would otherwise buy another manufacturer. How much of a price point move is still unknown, although this is likely to be showcased at Hamvention.

My bad...the specs suggest you *can* view an image set to send on the unit's display...

Expand the Fun of QSOs with Picture Sharing on the ICOM ID-50E

Looking for a way to make QSOs even more fun? The ICOM ID-50E gives you the opportunity with the Share Picture feature. With this function, you can share photos with other users in DV mode, adding an exciting visual element to your conversations.
Editing and sharing photos is a breeze with the ST-ID50A software, available on Google Play™. Simply connect your Android™ device to your ID-50E radio and use the software to edit and share your favorite pictures. If you prefer to connect to a Windows PC, the ST-ID50W software can be downloaded from the ICOM website and used with a microSD card or USB cable.
And before you send your pictures to others, you can preview them on the ID-50E display to make sure they look just right. Plus, with the ability to add voice messages to your picture sharing, you can really bring your conversations to life.
Please note that the Share Picture function requires the optional picture utility software ST-ID50A (on Google Play™) or ST-ID50W (Download from Icom website) and a user-supplied USB Type-C/USB Type-C cable.
So why settle for plain old QSOs? Enhance your conversations with the ICOM ID-50E's Share Picture function and start sharing photos and voice messages now.
