• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Don't buy a used APX

+1 with everyone else here. DO NOT buy an APX off of EBay if you're going to use it to save your life one day. You get what you pay for. Not only may they be stolen, but the insides of several radios may have been put together to make one radio. They could have water damage which hasn't corroded the components yet, or have went through accelerated time tests so the components are "older" than they appear to be.

Dont do it.

How about getting a second MTS2000 in VHF? They are going for $300.00 and with normal care they will most likely NEVER go bad. I have had one for 10 years now, and we just swapped out 16 year old models at work which were used 12 hours a day for 16 years......

The VERTEX line of radios are very small as well. The NYPD uses these as standard issue now for all patrol units.

Hi,
I'm a retired LEO living in WA working as an uncompensated Special Deputy on the Cold Case Homicide Team. My Dept switched to APX7000 Model 3.5 portables with a grant from Homeland Security. Unfortunately, the grant did not provide radios for the Special Deputies so if we want a radio we have to provide onwe ourselves which our radio tech will program but he can't service or repair them as he doesn't have the training. I'm hoping to get some pointers and advice in obtaining a used APX7000 as a new one is far outside the budget of my retired pension.
Thanks,
Al

Yup buy the seller not the product. There are only a couple of very reputable sellers on EBAY for APX 6000 and 7000. I think between spending 3K to 4K you are going to get a good decent radio. Make sure you run the serial number through Motorola or NCIC first to see if the radio is HOT or not.

There are legit radios out on the market but the bad seeds made people scared. I bet if you contacted that Rick Thompson dude on EBAY and wanted to do a deal offline and save 8 to 12 percent of EBAY fee's you can get a good deal. Take into account that EBAY's sellers fee's are highway robbery, and then add Paypal into the mix too. But at least you get buyer's protection. EBAY does not F around with that stuff. Buyer's have more rights than the sellers on EBAY.

APX 7000

I agree Rick Thompson is a good reliable person to buy radio equipment from, keep in mind that any equipment you personally purchase or use in your official non paid position can be deducted on your income taxes as long as you are not reimbursed for the equipment purchased, so keep receipts and paper work and let your accountant see your out of pocket expenses for your items used related to your work, this helps a little on the cost of the equipment you purchase.

I use the APX portable and mobile in my work and have an APX for ham use. It is a great radio line

I am another satisfied customer with praise for Rick Thompson. Fair prices for used radios in good condition.
