Im in Calgary Alberta Canada. Ive upgraded from an old 10 channel bearcat to a motorola psr600. Ive been able to input some Calgary police frequencies into the scanner I guess in conventional mode, but no matter how much I read the owners manual, I just dont understand what talk groups actually are. I dont understand how to find talk group IDs. I also dont understand the tgrp and tsys. Any help someone could give me would be greatly appreciated

Here is some basic information Trunking Basics - The RadioReference Wiki

You can also ask questions here in this forum for your area. They can help you get acquainted more with your scanner. Your PSR 600 isjust like my Pro 106.

talk groups

Im sorry I seem very ignorant about these topics, but what exactly are talk groups. How are they different than listening to conventional scanned frequecies

A Talkgroup is the term given to assigned groups on a trunked radio system. Unlike a conventional radio which assigns users a certain frequency, a trunk systems takes a number of frequencies allocated to the system. Then the control channel coordinates the system so talkgroups can share these frequencies seamlessly. The purpose is to dramatically increase bandwidth. Many radios today treat talkgroups as if they were frequencies, since they behave like such. For example, on a radio scanner it is very common to be able to assign talkgroups into banks or lock them out, exactly like that of conventional frequencies.

In radio communication, a conventional radio is generally understood as being a system in which each group of talkers is assigned one frequency. This is usually contrasted to a trunked radio system, where talkgroups share a given group of frequencies.

Adding to Oslo's comments.

A Trunk System is a combination of shared freqs (TSYS Object) and shared talkgroups (TGRP Objects)

The controller (CC) finds an unused voice frequency (VC) to match the user radio when keyed up with his/her assigned talkgroup (TG) to communicate with another user having same talkgroup. They are able to change the TG to a tac channel with a switch. Dispatch TG is used the most by all users of each agency (Law/Fire) etc.

The idea for your scanner is to place all CC/Alt CC in the TSYS freq section with TGRP's mapped to this TSYS using selected scanlist rather then banks.

A Programming Shortcut is in link below my signature but software is the easiest method.

However, OsloViking might present a very strong argument for manually programming.

It sounds like you guys have been doing this for a while. How do you find these talk groups to put them together. At this point all Im really interested in is getting to hear Calgary police service frequencies. My father retired from Los Angeles Fire dept and weve always had a scanner in the house, but they were so simple.Im really trying to understand what you guys are saying, but its not sinking in.

I can't give you expert advice like you've been given already, mainly because I still fumble thru some things concerning my PRO-106 (which is the RS portable version of the 600). What I can tell you however is to hang in there and read, read and read some more. I found that the more I read the better my understanding of the radio became. Still had to ask some (stupid) questions, but was always given good advice that always seemed to work just the way it was supposed to.

One thing I didn't see mentioned was the Easier To Read Pro-106/197/PSR500/600 Digital Scanner Manual. That might help some as well.

Good luck and welcome to the RR.

:)

Using Steve's suggestions and your premium subscription you can import Calgary police to Win500, edit the LED settings, save then send to scanner.

This is the data page, Calgary Digital Radio Trunking System, Calgary, Alberta - Scanner Frequencies

I imported police and fire talkgroups (171 of them) plus all 17 control frequencies.
