I just ran out the 30 day trial of Win97... So I put in the 180-day temp key, found here.. http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52358&highlight=win97+key

Now, when I go to the Scanner menu in Win97 to Upload to my Pro-97, it looks like this...

The other options weren't there before. Luckily it works when I choose "Upload to Scanner", but why is the menu different?

Also, any idea where the registration/trial data for Win97 is stored on the computer? Is it a registry entry?

Because Don updated the software for the additional scanners. Rather than trying to hack the software, buy it. It's worth the money.

Those 180 day keys were handed out for the specific purpose of allowing people that had purchased Win97 back in early to mid-2007 the opportunity to use it past the 30 day trial period - because Don apparently got backlogged and wasn't sending out the keys to people that had paid for them.

From how I understand it, the keys were good for 180 days after May 1, 2007 as explained on that page. Using them now won't have any effect on them from what I can tell. They will appear to make Win97 function, but after the 30 day trial period then Win97 should basically do whatever it would normally do, be that shutting down or simply refusing to run.

Perhaps Don himself will chime in, but I'm quite certain those keys were only meant for people that paid for Win97 during that timeframe in 2007 and simply hadn't received their proper legitimate activation keys. Somehow the info spread that "Wow, look, 6 months of usage for free, that's cool..." and continues to this day, which isn't the case.

But I could be wrong...

I don't want to step on any toes. I will purchase the genuine key within the next few days.

WIN97 and non PRO-97 scanners ...

I am already a registered user of WIN97. Does this mean I can use it for the newer scanners? If so, what do I have to do to activate it? Thanks.

Yes, it seems we have more options for our win97 software. Thanks Don !!!!

I quoted some info from his win97 page.

Upgrading from a previous version
To upgrade, merely download the new version of the ZIP file and extract its contents into the same folder where you currently run Win97, overwriting the older version. If you're a registered user, your registration will not be affected.

Download Win97 here. This is a ZIP file (approx. 875kB).

PSR-300/400, PRO-164 Information
As of version 1.14, Win97 has PSR-300, PSR-400, and PRO-164 support added. I added new menu items to the "Scanner" menu where you upload to and download from those radios. Also, there's a checkbox in the "Configuration -> Misc..." menu where you can tell Win97 to use the PSR-300's frequency table instead of the PRO-97's (this affects how Win97 will do frequency entry validation).
There are a few limitations:

* I didn't add controls for the Railroad search range or its lockouts. It seemed like quite a bit of work for a feature that almost nobody uses (tweaking Search Range settings on a PC).
* I didn't add controls for the "group enables" in the Aircraft range. Same reason as above.
* I didn't add a new "group enable" for the Public Safety Group 4, in either Search mode or Spectrum Sweeper mode. Same reason as above.
* The 3125 Hz steps in the 700 MHz bands will be displayed in Win97 on 250 Hz boundaries. They'll be "adjusted" to the nearest 3125 Hz step on upload to the radio.

This should be considered "beta" code at present. I've tested it with my PSR-300. A PSR-400 should be identical. A PRO-164 (RadioShack version of the PSR-300) should work, but I don't have one of those.

Win-97

Win-97 is worth the $25 price I have been using it for about five years and and would not want to do without it.
And as far as upgrading not a problem, one of the easiest software upgrades you will ever run.
