I have a new RadioShack PRO-433 that I received for Christmas. However, I didn't get a chance to set it up until this past week. Last night, while entering/moving some freq.'s, the backlight just stopped working - as if I hit a shut-off switch! The manual has nothing to say about the backlight (as usual with this manual!) and I've done everything that I know to do to get it to come back on. I thought that maybe I'd done something to turn it off while using the keypad.

I am hoping that someone might be able to tell me if I DID push a wrong button, or, if perhaps the bulb just burned out - which shouldn't happen on a new scanner! I would think that there should be a way to adjust and/or turn the light on or off... Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Lets you set the display brightness, or locks the
memory. To set the brightness of the display
backlight select BRIGHT, DIMMER or OFF.

Jerri,

Thank you so very much! I now understand how I turned it off!

I guess I jumped too quick regarding the fix for my backlight problem... I went to the menu to find where to turn the backlight "ON" but I didn't find anything regarding said light! I have noticed that some of the "words" in the menu box don't seem to appear on screen exactly as they are shown in the manual. Additionally, all I can find are menu items related to the "Signal Stalker I" settings. I also tried using the M-Lock/DM button with no results there either.

I apologize that I let my enthusiasm over-load my skill level, but could someone please provide me some further info as to what I'm doing wrong? FWIW, I did re-set what looked somewhat like "S-S Lit" but changing that from "off" to "on" didn't do anything.

Thanks (again),
Ernie

If the DM/M-LOCK key didn't work I think it's time to take a trip to Radio Shack with the scanner and get a replacement. That button is the only control on that scanner for backlight control.

Thanks once again. I tried pushing that DM/M-LOCK key and the only response I got was turning the M-LOCK on and off if I kept it pushed in for too long. I guess I'll take back into RadioShack and take advantage of their "World-Class" warranty service!

The manual mentions the light on pages 13 & 37, but it does not explain how it works.
When you push the DM button it steps through BRIGHT, DIM and OFF.

It looks as if there are 6 bulbs, 3 on each side, so it is likely to be just a loose connection. If you are comfortable in opening the case, you can check the wire connections. It might save you a trip back to RS.

Dick,

Thanks for that info. It does seem awful strange to me that all the bulbs went out at once. I was looking right at the scanner went the lights went out. As I said in an earlier post, it was as if a switch was flipped - no blink, flutter, brighter, dimmer - nothing. I will give your suggestion a try as soon as get time.

Hello Again Folks,

Well, I took out the screws, as Dick H suggested, looked at everything REALLY, REALLY hard - didn't see anything loose - put it back together - AND THE LIGHTS CAME BACK ON!! I guess it just needed a nasty, mean look at it's insides and decided not to mess with me any further! BTW, the DM switch works as it should now - dimmer, lighter & off.

Thanks to all,
Ernie
