To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Now, which one confirms settings with a nice large backlit display?

QT60 is fast & efficient.
QT40/Ares2 confirms settings as well. You'd know this if you ever used one. The QT60/5555n2 is NOT fast or efficient. It's the worst design when compared to the original 5555 layout, and Ares2 layout. If you like mashing buttons multiple times just to switch bands or modes, great, but quit promoting it's "superior ease of use". That's complete BS. The 5555n2 is horrible to use mobile. It's also just as annoying to use as a base. The only nice thing about the QT60/5555n2 is the display.

I’ve had multiple radios with impossible-to-read-at-speed front panel controls. Memorization required and not always reliable. Unlike you, in situations where a lot more is happening than whether my coffee is getting cold this matters a great deal.

Display puts it over top. Controls are E-Z in every other way.

You like it, keep it. I’d not ever recommend it for mobile as I prefer that men use AM/SSB as their minimum. Changing back & forth is the game when that’s wanted and obsolete controls go only with obsolete radios.

(“You” as used here is for anyone reading along).

Just yesterday here was a backlit panel with crowded controls and a large S-Meter on what was the best FCC-type AM/SSB radio.

Great radio. Loved it. This was high performance when the install and antenna system was first-rate and the West Mountain speaker was in place.

QT40 have these things?

What about running inbound pre-dawn dark, with rain in a 78,000-lb rig in a-wipe commuter traffic to and thru Washington DC where construction with weekly lane changes are ahead before being near to radio traffic on other major highways with interchanges . . and as the sun comes up Skip is also present?

The tools matter. Who said what and where are they? As most have lousy radio rigs and can’t hear you . . that Meter tells the story to them that can read it.

Why would someone want to go backwards with no readable meter and can’t see the controls?

— AM-only these new radios aren’t enough better than that 959. Especially not with DSP in the audio.

When’s the last time your paycheck that week got cut by 12% you made an error?

Health & Wealth are always on the line. Avoidance of death or life-changing injury is default just ahead of job retention. A bad enough accident (your fault or not) good luck anyone else will hire you.

Do you expect to be on the local TV news that night? Everyone’s new “bad guy”? Tied to court cases that take 5-10/years. No thanks.

You don’t drive an 18-whlr? Okay, you’re pulling a heavy trailer, you have an appointment time with a ten-minute window and you’ve departed such that even with problems you should arrive 30-45” early (as they won’t let you in until 30” ahead). If you become good at this, you aren’t ever late. There’s effectively no such thing as “bad traffic” or “there was a wreck”.

I’ve re-routed myself as many as seven consecutive times and gone 50+ miles out-of-route across Dallas/Ft Worth to be on-time as the first wreck “caused” idiots to start having their own wrecks as they tried to get around it according to GPS, etc, on other highways. No Citizen Band? Then it ain’t gonna happen as you need instantaneous reports.

— That day I was 5” past appointment time, and not the 45” early I would have been otherwise.

I’ve got one helluva lot of miles and years with the radio type shown. Memorizing multiple control functions is great until the situation out ahead gets weird.

How about tornado time in western Oklahoma?

The upgrade to a 959 is rock-steady SSB with no diminution in features (lighting & meter), and easier controls.

QT60 meets that, and so would the G2/Washington.

You keep your 40-oz and get on down the road.

1’15” allotted. 45” expected.
Used 1’20”.

No one will thank you for just having done your job. That includes no wild-ass antics behind the wheel.

What mattered was getting those opened van doors against the dock. And being on-time to get re-loaded.

A few nights in jail appeal?
Maybe prison-time?
After which is slavery-wage for nearly a decade?

Incentive drives outcomes, good and bad.
The right tools matter. Really matter.

When one is new to making his living this way the CB is more comfort than anything. The family man rut for Joe Average commuter. Believes he can answer “what is CB”?

Instead (with a hi-perf rig + some insight as to how it works in peaceable times) Citizen Band opens up a world he didn’t otherwise suspect was present. The Margin That Matters when Time & Distance are against more than just a clock.

I’m obviously in favor of NRC-radios as I practically introduced and developed the discussion of it around here beginning with the advantage of outboard DSP.

But I’m not in favor of non-SSB or poor design.

Yes, blue light from any device is the choice made by The Enemy to hurt people. TV and eveything else.

The 959b can have the backlit portion turned off.

Uhhhh... the buttons/controls on the QT60 aren't backlit either.

Controls are E-Z in every other way.
Wrong. I posted why they aren't E-Z 2 or 3 times now. Invalid statement.

I’d not ever recommend it for mobile as I prefer that men use AM/SSB as their minimum.
Uhhh.... the QT40 is an AM/FM/SSB/CW rig. Are you confusing it with the CB500 or CB900 or something?

Anyway, some will like the QT60. It's an OK radio (my least favorite). It's function/menu layout is crap, which again, i posted 2 or 3 times already on why it's super annoying, and not as quick and easy to use as the 5555 Plus/N (HS4/ss6900v) or the Ares2 (QT40).

On that note, use what you want. I don't give a shiz. I for one am glad i bought the 5555n2 (QT60) used for less than $100. It's not worth the $240 price tag IMHO. The HS4 and QT40 are $159.99 and don't suffer from the annoyances associated with the 5555n2.

Radioddity is having the Black Friday deals ..... they are taking 20% off..... so their QT 60 is normally $259........ with the black Friday code 24ROBF
it was $208 with free shipping.... it's 2 inches shorter than the brand new Anytone 5555 N II sitting in it's box waiting for me to replace the President Grant in my F150..... those 2 inches probably wouldn't EVER be noticed.... but for that price I bought it and will keep the other as a spare....
I NEEDED A NEW RADIO LIKE I NEED A HOLE IN MY HEAD...... but I did it.

I drove up north toward I-10 today to do a little shooting with my 22's. There's a Love's truck stop at the highway and I stopped on the side of the road to see if I could get a radio check from someone. No luck. I tried for a good 10 minutes. When I got home I downloaded the android recording app to my phone and finally heard myself talking through the two radios. At least being roughly 25' apart I know there working.

have you tried 37 or 38 lower side band???? I was going to do a test today and turned it on to see what the conditions were like... I asked for a contact and got several people all across the country on the first try.... and that seems to happen every day whether I'm in my truck or on my base..... you should have no trouble talking to someone???? and you're not the only person that seems to have trouble finding someone??? I don't get it??

Yes I did. Forgot to mention that. I tried 37 and 38, and as of today, haven't been able to get any kind of radio report. So I went off of one of your posts and I think someone mentioned on the gmrs forum about recording.

I really don't get it?? maybe it's your location... but HONESTLY I always see if I can get someone in my pick up when I go out... about once a week and many times I say anyone have a copy on 155 in Massachusetts???? and I get at least several people from many states saying they hear me loud and clear???? and that's on my 35 year old 27 watt radio!!!! it couldn't be easier????
I have WX2Watch coming over my house after thanksgiving to see how his new QT 60 and Stryker SAR-10 work.. I plan to try to talk to him for 30 miles as he is coming towards me and I will record it for You-Tube.... be he also has not been able to contact anyone????? I'll look at his system... and I may put his radio in my truck and my radio in his truck and see how they work....
if his radio works great in my truck then I know it's the installation and antenna.

While I was out in the desert away from interference, I played with the swr and got the antenna to 1.0 on channel 1 and 1.2 on channel 40. Only thing I can think of is being so far south. I do appreciate all of your input.
