I guess it would be ok as a dual-bander, but I'd rather have the quad band and APRS features that are on the VX-8DR. That's what makes it unique. But I understand that there are people out there that are crying for a decent, simple dual-bander that doesn't have D-STAR or APRS or any funny business.

Lots of discussion about the VX-8GR in the VX-8 Yahoo groups. The GR has a built-in GPS receiver, so it's generally believed that it will also do APRS. Yaesu may be trying to position themselves to be ready for the new Kenwood APRS dual-band handheld that is expected to be shown at Dayton in two months. It's supposed to have a built-in GPS receiver, too.

According to this, it looks like it's going to be a lower-cost 2m/440 only with built-in GPS (as you said), APRS, and minus the rest of the VX-8R's features:
