Well I guess officers are not being inspected too good before rolling out of the command as I am still seeing a lot of officers carrying Baofeng radios. Unless these are in fact department authorized. And as far as cops buying radios at Radio Shack, I highly doubt that since radio shack does not really sell radios besides FRS/GMRS radios which are already preprogrammed. I just think the media has no ideas what it's talking about when they say they are buying them at Radio Shack.

NYPD & FD issued radios ? What radio do they use ?

Hello,

Im retired LAPD, we use the Motorola XTS 5000 in our agency.

Im trying to find out what radio NYPD / NYFD use the most ?

With 40,000 NY public safety officers, is it one model or a multitude of brands and models?

Thanks for any info you respond with.

NYPD Patrol officers all carry Vertex VX537 portables. Detectives, high ranking officers and officers assigned to specialized units use the smaller Vertex VX800 as well as the Vertex VXP824 portables. Officers assigned to the Transit Bureau all use Motorola APX7000 UHF2/VHF model 1.5 radios. Emergency service officers carry a few different radios. Most carry the VX537 and some also carry the Motorola SSE5000 as well as some APX7000's as well.

As far as FDNY, they are all carrying Motorola XTS3500 portable radios for the fireground. They also use XTS5000's as well. FDNY EMS all carry XTS5000 model II radios.

I guess my question is why someone would purchase a portable with their own money? Are the NYPD officers not issued radios or at least sign out/in at the end of the shift?

All NYPD officers are assigned their own radio. I guess they like those little Baofeng radios for the size? Dual band capability to monitor precinct traffic as well as Transit Bureau? No radio ID's?

The take-home radio policy is fairly new, and not completely rolled out everywhere yet AFAIK, which probably explains why a lot of members bought their own in the past.

The fact that these radios don't send MDC ids is a bonus for those who do mischief; the electronics section has been cracking down on issued radios that don't have the MDC programmed, and radios that don't send it now stand out a lot more than they once did.
