As of last week Newport Police began encrypted transmission on thier main dispatch Tgp 1300. According to an email from the department is is a permenant change due to operational needs. I beleive however this was done not for operational needs since it had been available for monitoring for the last 3yrs. However a new Intrim Chief of Police was appointed last week, and with a new Chief comes new policies.

Operational needs ya thats a good one.Thats short for we dont want the public to hear our transmissions anymore. Nothing new..eventually they will all be ENC. Newport fire may be switching over to Riscon fulltime soon.I heard them testing radios on their fire ground talk groups the other day.

That old question " what radio"

With Newport switching over and Portsmouth already changed, reentering the scanning hobby I'm confused as to what scanner to purchase. The last time I was involved I had (and still have) the Realistic PRO- 2005. I relize that I'll have to reach deep to get a quality unit so am looking for advice before I make the plunge. Live on the island Portsmouth area so guess I'll need an external antenna. Any advice will be much apprec.

It doesn't matter which scanner you have, you won't hear Portsmouth or Newport Police as both are encrypted and cannot be monitored with scanners.

Rescueone;
Guess I should have mad myself clear, a better scanner to rec digital sig. and trunking systems. Also an external antana to bring in distant sigs. ( Providence R.I. ) and other surrounding towns/cities. I guess the days of gust cranking in 7 or 8 numbers are long gone! As I said in my first message I guess
I'll have to "DIG DEEP $$$$ " Encrypted sig are here and we just have to accept it.
