Hi all,

Our state representatives are about to vote on bill A4146/S2764 which would as worded ban the use of all electronic communication devices in a vehicle while in motion. The media has picked up on it's intent, to ban the use of text messaging devices but made no mention of it's scope and implications. I have already written to them asking that it be reworded or amended to be more specific in order to exclude scanners and two way radios.

Today I received a confusing e-mail stating that it has recently been amended to exclude Amateur Radio BUT the writer stated that I ask they vote on the bill with the amendment. Two bills, one with and one without?

I have read the original and the way it stands it's all inclusive but haven't seen any amendment. Pardon my confusion, but does anybody know what's going on?

That's a helpful comment, especially from one having an invalid Amateur callsign for a user name. If you want an answer to your question look up the bill and read it for yourself. BTW, you'll need a bigger screw than that puny thing.

Where did you find the definition of 'communication devices'? After reading the Senate version (same), I can't find any reference to 'receivers' of any kind.

Guess we'll have to rip out our car radios.

Bigger screw? Sounds kind of gay.

WA1CRZ, your trolling nonsense is tolerated somewhat in the Tavern (where you spend most of your time); however, even there you are ridiculed. You wake up ancient threads and brag about it. Joe (you know what I mean by that), you have violated your user agreement here by having multiple UserID's. And now you are trying to disrupt a regional forum with your crap.

Either stick to posting your trash in the Tavern, or just quit posting it at all.
This is your official warning.

Hi again,

Amp, that's my point entirely, the bill does not define "communication devices" which makes it ridiculously broad in scope. This is typical of the brainless NJ legislature so I guess we'll have to remove our car radios. I share your sarcasm, thanks.

Yes Tech, I did say "The media has picked up on it's intent, to ban the use of text messaging devices..." in my original post.

I guess nobody really knows what's going on besides peas rattling around in empty skulls in beautiful downtown Trenton New Jersey. We'll just have to see where this leads, frankly I hope it reaches a dead end if for no other reason than it could lead to legal entanglement before it all goes away.

Thanks Lou, and BTW I know what you mean by that too. <wink> We're all pretty much fed up if I read some of the other forums correctly, you won't be the first to drop the hammer on him.

In this case, I agree with Warren that the wording of the bill and the intent of legislation seem to be at some degree of variance and the the exclusion of amateur radio is by no means ensured. While I normally dislike political lobbying (and most politicians), it seems like an appropriate time to start those letters and phone calls.

Actually, the bill was passed and specifically EXCLUDES amateur radio. All licensed hams have nothing to worry about.

NY, my "confusion" was about the two bills issue that was later resolved as expected with the passage of the AR exclusion amendment.

Joseph, as worded all other radio services are screwed. That's why I wrote on another forum it'll be fun watching cops hand out tickets to taxi drivers, firemen, EMTs and each other. When it comes to FRS, GMRS, MURS and CB draw your own conclusions.

with cell phones and all the other types of communication stuff, there is no reason for a car to have a scanner in it NJ is long overdo,in joinning other states that have banned there use in cars.99.999% of people in the US with scanners in a car are drug dealers.
I say leave your scanners where it belongs, and if a good call come in have your wife ,mother or whoever is at home call you on the cell phone.

pog,

I posted this after your delete request...but I stand in support of your orginal comments

I've got to believe that he's just trying to be outragous and forgot to press the smiley face button. He could not possibly be serious. If not, I'd love to know what his reference sources are to back up his claim that "99.999% of people in the US with scanners in a car are drug dealers." Either I am a drug dealer, or there must be a massive amount of scanners in cars.

I won't entertain his suggestion to have someone call you "if a good call come in" beyond to say that it's patently ridiculous.

New Jersey and it's laws relating to mobile scanning should be held up as models for other states to follow...and New York should be the the first.
