I noticed lately the troop cars have VHF High Band Antennas on the roof. Do they now have SPEN in the car?

I have even seen K-40 CB whips on some. They used to only have that on the GSP and the Tpke.

Thanks,
RD

I always hear troopers say "Did you get that on spen?" to the dispatcher when the dispatcher misses a message. So yes, I suppose they have SPEN in their vehicles.

A few years ago someone here posted a link to a public notice / request for bids for NJSP patrol cars and the specs called for a VHF-high radio.

The frequency for SPEN1 is 154.68000

It's in the Common/Shared

I hear spen being rebroadcast on the SP talkgroups? Why would they need a different radio?

Could they just be for scanners?

On what talkgroups is spen being rebroadcasted?

Nope. The EMRAD frequencies (low VHF around 39 MHz) are now used primarily for emergency management regional purposes - especially for emergency preparedness activities around the nuclear generating stations. Avoid SPEN/JEMS 4. Far too much idle chit chat from squad members and NYC bus drivers. 4 is often referred to as the State Police Entertainment Network. Many moons ago, State police use these low band frequencies as their primary radio network.

NOA for NJSP which includes a Motorola PM400. I know it's old, but it's what Google turned up.

From what I understand spen can be patched to any talk group that requests it. Also, the Parkway troop cars used to have vhf radios in them, the troopers like the idea especially up north where spen is very active, it helped when small towns had a chase or were looking for a car involved in a crime, it kept them up on what was going on in case they were close and could assist if needed. Not sure if they still have them installed now.

I understand the purpose, but if they are going to ask the dispatchers if they heard SPEN and to repeat the info, why buy the radio? As if they don't have enough in the car already.

The dispatchers will always give out the info to the troopers anyway. Unless they have other things programmed in those radios.

I have read allot of your messages here in the Jersey forum, and I can see you educated and have knowledge of dispatchers and radio precedures. With the spen radio in the car the trooper does not have to bother the dispatcher, who already has his hands full with phones, radio calls, lookups checking on warrants, etc. The trooper is listening and will get info first hand and if he can, get involved. I heard it many times a trooper call another trooper and ask him are you monitoring spen, something going on in Irvington, or where ever, they may be coming your way. With just the 800 radio in the car a subject can pass the trooper on the road by the time the town calls the barracks, gives the info to the dispatcher whos putting it in the cad and then to the car, the car is out of site. For the price of the radio, it sounds like a good investment to me.

Some of that may be true, but if the trooper can't hear it becasuse he is too far away it's worthless.

SPEN is not repeated. A trooper in Roxbury is not going to hear a pursuit coming his way in Parsippany on 280, in time to position himself to join in.

On previous occasions where pursuits were going east to west, the dispatcher always had to brodcast the location every 30sec. Going back a few years, SPEN radios were in the cars. It now appears they are starting it up again.

If it works i'm all for it, but there must have been a reason they stopped, other than financial considerations.

Now I hear troopers asking dispatchers if they heard the last SPEN transmission. So I doubt they are getting everything, probably kibbles and bits.
