Can anyone let me know what is going on in the above recording. I'm still just getting into milair listening and trying to get my equipment figured out and get my antennas up. I recorded this audio clip from my BC898T. The frequency is 260.9. I can hear a couple of fighters (Cosmic, I believe to be F-16's out of NJ ANG but could be wrong). Can anyone tell me what is exactly going on in the audio clip. It sort of sounds like they are tracking some type of threat, don't know if its an exercise or Combat Air Patrol. Let me know what you think.

wow I guess I'm surprised I'm hearing CAP out of Maryland.

Now when a CAP is up, is the Norad/Huntress freq 260.900 able to be heard from all over the region/state? Or does it just have to do with the flight level of the F-22's? Also how does one determine if the "Sonic" call sign is referencing to ANG NJ or Langley Raptors??

If you're within 200 miles of the aircraft you going to hear it unless your equipment is junk or you're in a really bad location. As for hearing Huntress, you have to be close to a transmitter location. I'm lucky enough to be close to a transmitter used by NORAD and even closer to one used by Potomac TRACON. SONIC is one of many 1st Fighter Wing callsigns. I don't know of it ever being used by NJ ANG.

kmacka, a lot of folks I know keep spreadsheets with callsigns and attempt to associate them with their respective units. As freqhopping says, SONIC is one of the rather newer (first I have a note on them is from this past Thanksgiving) callsigns for the 1st FW out of Langley. They're stuck doing coverage over the Prez for a few days, then he's going to Texas during the New Years. The FAA TFR website has all the details of the restrictions, and heaven help anyone who tries to violate them...they will have a very unpleasant Xmas, for sure.

Another way we know they are Langley flights is the interflight freq they are using (262.025). That's on our database - of course any unit can come up on a frequency, but it's another clue.

The folks on the Maryland milcom thread have noted various signal levels from Huntress over the years, so I think one can safely assume there are multiple transmitters/antennas throughout the nation.
