I have been hearing CHP Red-2 low band being rebroadcasted on 460.450. But only at night. Sometime after 4pm then other times after 5pm. Also not being every night. Anyone have a clue of whats the logic is behind this. This is great that they are doing it becasue now we can hear both Station and Car.

Just a guess...but might have something to do with the old CA State Police that merged years ago with CHP. Perhaps their dispatcher goes home and CHP Redding picks up the dispatch function for those officers providing security at state buildings in the area. I just checked RR database and 460.45 is listed as used at a state building in Redding....so CHP officers providing secuirty there use this freq and at night CHP Redding is piped in as their night dispatcher.

I've had 460.450 in my scan load forever up here. This is recent to the last 7 days and has never occurred up here in the past that I'm aware of. The CHP Dispatch already is the control operator for this UHF channel, and is how the local DMV investigators have dispatch access. Other state agencies like Fish and Game on multi-band radios have used this for access to CHP dispatch also. At first I thought the patch was temporary for an incident or something, but it keeps coming back.

Here are my notes so far since this has started:
  • So far appears to be 100% of mobile traffic out of Tehama and Shasta (not heard a Trinity River unit though)
  • Mobile traffic seems to be the voter RX out at the console, units from very diverse and extreme locations are coming up with superb signal/audio quality.
  • Not all Base traffic comes across UHF. I'm hearing about 3 lowband transmit sites over UHF, but there are at least 2 sites the console is picking to transmit on, that isn't coming over the UHF, but I hear the mobile's response. One of those sites I can still hear on the Low side, and the 2nd I can neither hear Low or UHF.
  • 460.450 is up on Tuscan Buttes and Sugarloaf, besides local coverage in Redding which I wouldn't hear. My signal strength is putting this as Tuscan. Sugarloaf I know I don't get interior at my house.
  • When it first started last week the dispatcher had both radios turned up at their console, so you could hear the delayed audio coming over her low band transmission, which really irked the officers who had no idea what was up. It was ringing good, almost full on feedback at a few points. It has since cleaned up (turned down?)
  • Friday night had 3 radio operators up at one point, not sure if 3 consoles, or 2 consoles and 1 subbed in for 1 temporarily, as I only heard him, the 3rd, for about 5 minutes.
  • Tuscan Buttes also has a Red3 transmitter that is tied into Red2's Tuscan transmitter. Been that way since beginning of CHPERS project. The UHF patch covers both.
  • CRIS is up on Tuscan and South Fork Mtn, but no local traffic yet on either, and neither are tied into the core yet (which is through Bloomer, once Bloomer comes up, Tuscan and SouthFork will be lit too. Figured this patch might be to help create radio traffic for CRIS testing, but night time doesn't make since.
Quite the puzzle, but nobody is complaining getting some amazing CHP audio above our low band coverage. ;)

In addition to CHP low band channels (both base & mobile), I usually also monitor the old State Police UHF frequencies (their exact names seem to change depending on the area of the state being used). On my most recent trip back from the Pacific Northwest (mid July 2020), I noticed that CHP traffic was being "repeated" on the UHF channels. I remember this was abundant from Redding southward to oh around Glenn County.

As I recall though, I was not just hearing CHP traffic repeated. If I recall correctly, Cal Fire and perhaps other traffic was also being repeated. Since I was driving, and didn't have the time to stop and explore; I just made a mental note of it. I found this post to be very interesting. Now I am anxious to head back north and listen again.

In Santa Barbara County the CHP offices functioned as dispatchers for Fish and Game (now Wildlife). They could also talk to CalTrans on low band. Did not repeat CHP traffic however.

Have you done a search of the 700 MHz band to see if they have a conventional 700 MHz channel up as well? They have one up on Pine Hill for the CHP gold channel, I have to imagine they are doing this at more that one site in the entire state.

Are these in the DB? I do scan all the stuff already in the DB.
I don't think they are in the database. They really aren't a database kind of thing, they are just the 700 Mhz frequencies allocated to the state. They can be used for anything.

I figured you would have some input. sometime last week i did here 90-S1 calling a 36- unit. that unit responded that he was south of Corning. My guess is that the 90-S1 was up in Weaverville. I can getthe CC for the South Fork site from my house 273@clear creek.

That's not all that's on 700 MHz. They are using the frequencies for a lot more than most people realize.

As I said, they have a conventional P25 700 MHz retransmission of the gold broadcasting from Pine Hill. It can be heard quite well in many areas of Sacramento. I have to imagine they are doing this with more than just the gold, and likely with more than just 700 MHz.

As a scanner enthusiast since 1987 in Shasta County, I have had the Old State Police in my scanners "just because". The Redding CHP dispatch center covers Shasta, Tehema and Eastern Trinity County (not sure if Humboldt dispatch picks up other parts of Trinity County).
I am loving the traffic coming over the old SP channel. I go to Chico everyday for work and I can hear this traffic from down there.
