Noticed a new radio tower on orchard st. Looks like it’s not finished yet. There is one antenna on the top. Doesn’t look like 800. Anyone with more information? Thanks George

I too drove by recently and saw that new antenna on Orchard St. I appreciate one of the members on this site sending "georged4997" some info on it and he in turn passed that info onto me.

I believe the system is being installed by "Tactical Radio" of Guilford (?).

Sounds like as soon as the end of the month, some kind of simulcast will be setup with portables running on CLMRN and the mobiles still on the existing system.
I was recently at Mohegan Sun and use Rt 2 from Hartford to travel to 395 to the Sun. Usually, I have to turn on Troop E as I approach Norwich and leave the coverage of Troop K. When I was there in mid December, I noticed I had a better signal on Troop K all the way to the casino.

As far as I know the only dept in the City of Norwich going to a new radio system is the police, they are going onto the State Police system.

As I understand it, latest word on the completion date for the Norwich Police Radio System is sometime between mid/end of April.

The portable radios for the Norwich Police have already been taken care of.

At the Norwich site on Orchard St, recently a prefab brick building approximately 20 x 40 was installed by being trucked into the site on a flatbed and then lifted into place using a large crane. For this project, I believe Orchard St was blocked off with No Street Parking allowed ( I think this occurred on Feb 27th).

As I understand it, the wooden poles used now to hold a few antennas will be removed and then the antennas will be put onto the new tower.

Work still needs to be completed at the Lisbon site, located at the Lisbon Incinerator.

When the entire job is completed, I've been told that the main dispatch channel will NOT be encrypted. Hopefully, it stays that way. However, other PD channels will be.

The same company that did the Groton and Stonington PD is doing this Norwich job. Word is that both Groton and Stonington are very happy with their systems.

My sincere appreciation to the individual who took the time to answer my many questions regarding this upcoming radio changeover.

I imagine that completion of the new Norwich Police system has been put on hold until the virus crisis is over just like the water main replacement in my neighborhood .

Better than nothing.

And yes, most likely any major non-essential projects are on hold.

As of Tuesday April 7th, what seems to be a low band (?) antenna is now mounted on the top of the tower.

Also two Norwich Public Utility Trucks were on scene, with NPU employees working at that Orchard St site.

*** reported by "georged4997". Thank you Sir for that update.

It was originally reported that the new radio system would be in operation between mid to the end of April. Norwich Police Dispatch is still operating on the low band channel. Perhaps the project might be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that's just a guess.

Member "georged4997", advises us a week or so ago drive-by on Orchard St in Norwich, "the temporary wooden antenna poles have been removed and now at the very top of the high tower is a small dish type unit.

THANK YOU "georged4997" for this latest report.

Another update will follow based on his (georged4997) most recent drive-by on a follow up.

Let me make a correction to my reply # 12 (above).

I am told that the wooden poles are STILL there and have NOT been removed.

Poles are there. Two antennas on the top of the tower. Looks like all the electrical wires are now on the tower.
