Well here is my question. I have always left the scanner on when talking on my ham radio. I typical use 5watts of power for the local repeaters but I have used 50watts with the scanner on before. Now here's the problem, yesterday I went to go rx weather which in my area is 162.550mhz and could not rx it. When I first bought the scanner no problem at all rx the weather station. So I think I might have desensitized the rx on my scanner. Has anyone else had this happen? Also the scanner antenna is spaced about 20 inches from ham antenna. Does the radio shack pro-96 have some type of rf blocker I guess you could say to save the scanner from being overloaded?
My friend was telling me when he went by cellphone towers that the his front end on his scanner would be overloaded. Making the scanner not be able to decode the digital signal. I could not figure this out becasue when I went by cellphone towers never made the scanner not be able to decode digital. So we did some testing. There is a cellphone tower located in Fenton, Mi that when my friend goes by the cellphone tower he can't decode at all. So we brought my scanner which is a pro-96 and he brought his 996t and two of his pro-96's. We first hooked up his 996t. Sure enough could not decode. Then we tried both of his pro-96's and they would sometimes decode but not always. Then we tried my pro-96 and decoded just fine. We were so stumped by this. Trying out so many scanners and only mine was working. Well next week I went back over to my friends house and he was listing to the weather station just fine. So I turned my pro-96 on and could not hear weather station at all. So we came to the conslusion that my rx was desensitized. So there is the story behind what we determind.
The scanner still works fine on 800mhz but not on vhf. The other thing bout this is I don't have to worrie bout missing anything when i'm going by a cellphone antenna and works really good on on simolcast systemes.
