To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am new to Kenwood equipment, and I am in the market for a radio in the NX-340 series. I wanted to know if there are any differences between the models NX-340-K and NX-340U-K? Are both programmed with the KPG-170D software?

I assume they are the same, with one being a newer production version of the other, but I am unsure. The brochures on both models seem identical.

Thanks for the help in advance!

The U is the USA market radio. The non-U is the Canadian/other market radio.

The U model requires KPG-170D
The non-U model requires KPG-169D

For starters, that model is EOL.

I forgot about that. Thanks nonetheless. Just planning on getting a relatively cheap model to use on our NXDN system at work.

Perfect, thank you. Looks like I will be going with a 340U as I don't want to deal with a non-US version. And from the looks of it KPG-170D is easier to buy.

Before you buy...
The older NX-#40's would only do 6.25KHz digital.
If your employer is running an NXDN system in 6.25KHz, you'll be OK. If they are running a 12.5KHz system, you need to make 100% sure you get a newer model that will do both 6.25KHz and 12.5KHz.

Make sure you get approval in writing from the licensee before adding a radio to their system. The FCC rules are very clear on the licensee being responsible for all radios on their system, even yours.

They are using ProTalk equipment, and I'm pretty sure those frequencies can only be 6.25 KHz, correct me if I'm wrong.

And of course I will seek written approval...actually not my first rodeo of using my own radio on another entity's system. Getting written clearance was easy then, we'll see how it will be now.

Which model radio are they using?

A mix of NX-340U16P2's and NX-P500's, both UHF.

I would go for the NX-340U16P2 model but I want to be able to program my own frequencies to use on personal time, and from what I understand the ProTalk models are limited to the preset frequency allotment.

I don't recall on the NX-340 protalks, but the NX-P500's will do both.

Take a look at the NX-1300's. It's the newer model radio, and pretty well priced. It'll do what you need. Software may be a challenge, though, no way to get it without purchasing from Kenwood dealers.
