i'm sure im going to end up calling uniden, but just in case it
has happened to someone else this way.

The serial number with the Z is on the rear of the radio, you want the serial number that is in settings under scanner information... the last three numbers after the dash will be the sum #.

got all that. it is registered with uniden by putting in that info already.
this is further down the road than that. the new key even shows up there.
when i did the DMR upgrade it went smoothly.

Are you saying that you already have the digital key from Uniden, and can't get it into the scanner?

EDIT.... OK, I see now that is the case

When getting the upgrades, take note if you are being asked for the serial number (SN) or the electronic serial number (ESN).. they are different.

When you first register your scanner at the Uniden site you will be asked to enter the serial number of your scanner... you use the 12 digit serial number (SN) (in the battery compartment on the SDS100 or the rear label on the SDS200) of the scanner and enter all of the digits.

When you purchase the upgrades after registering your scanner, it will ask you for the electronic serial number (ESN)... the 14 digit number from the scanner's on-screen menu system (settings ---> see scanner info). The 3 digit number after the hyphen there is the checksum. When you enter the ESN to purchase the upgrades, that window will already have the first digits of the ESN posted there, just enter the remaining of the 14 digits and then enter the checksum number that's after the hyphen.
yes sir, did all that. got the DMR and had to put all that in.
figured it out after a few try that the first few digits are already
in there for you. but yes i have been thru that and everything was
great with th DMR. I will call them in the morning and get it figured out

Dashes must be included...make sure zero(0) is not put in as oh (O) or the other way around. That's been my issue in the past.

it never gets passed the first letter. it is a letter that cannot be confuseD.
on the 1st digit to enter its says incorrect key.
not in a panic, i' sure it will get fixed somehow.

So you're turning the selector knob to change the letter/dash etc., then the right arrow to move to the next selection?

Are you entering the first character before inputting the second one? Add all the characters (including the dashes) at once. The 6 key moves the curser to the right after selecting a character with the scroll knob.

Check letter "D" is not entered in as number "0" or visa versa.

Once you enter the first digit of the code you use the (<CURSOR>) buttons below the display to advance or go back a digit. If you hit ENTER after the first digit you will get the error as it assumes you finished entering the key.
I just figured that out! sometimes I feel like an idiot. LoL
you are correct sir freqseeker. I was trying to enter them one at a time.
my thanks to all who helped.
