Excuse me for my lack of knowledge on this as I am not from NYC. What exactly are the Patrol Boro's functions? Are they like a Boro wide Patrol that can be used to cover calls in any prescient when there is high call volume? and are the PB channels active? and worth listening to while down in the city?

Offically, I do not know. Pratcally, large Boro ops. Example: the police details at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field on game days. Not to busy other times. The big action is ESU/SOD, Highway and C/W 1,2&3. You can even hear when the PC is moving, that channel is in the clear.

I'm also not quite sure what the cars just marked for a boro are, ie. PBMS, PBBX etc.. I believe they are simply staff cars for the officers assigned there.

However,

The ones that say PBXX IMPACT, are cars used by IMPACT(rookie) officers who are assigned to an Impact Response Team which floods high crime areas.

Also,

The oes that say XXTF, are Patrol Boro Task Force cars. They handle saturation patrols, special details, riot/disturbance control and response to mobilizations.

This is from Wikipedia..It is an accurate explanation too ..

Patrol boroughs

For management purposes, police precincts are grouped collectively based on their jurisdiction into the patrol boroughs. There are eight patrol boroughs. They are: Manhattan North, Manhattan South, Brooklyn North, Brooklyn South, Queens North, Queens South, Bronx, and Staten Island. Each patrol borough has a number of police precincts and the grand total of police precincts in New York City is 76.

The cars marked PBBS,PBBX,PBMS,PBMN and so on are regular patrol cars for the task force units. They are slowly relettering them to have the "TF" on them as well. Each boro has at least one task force that reponds to high crime areas and areas with a high volume of calls. They also respond to mobilizations for a number of different jobs including traffic details for dignitaries, barricade jobs, perp searches and other major jobs to keep pct. units available for 911 jobs in their respective pct.'s.

That pretty much answers my questions guys. I was looking to program up one of my radio's for when I go down the city and I was limited to 16ch's so it will look like I'll just throw SOD CW1&2 and the PBMN channel, along with the FDNY dispatch for Manhattan and just load the rest of with NYC ham repeaters.

patrol boro's are the management for a group of pct's

taskforce is a boro wide pct, they do not use cars marked with PBBS,PBMN etc. it would be BSTF MNTF etc. i do not know anything about slowly relettering, i been with the nypd since 2001,and they always been this way

taskforce goes to high crime area's and when requested for a bigger crime or mobilization

if you see a rmp such as pbbs impact, its a loaner car assigened to impact units from the pbbs boro

boro channels, are used for operations such as details, under cover ops etc. it is not simplex, it has a repeater, but no dispatcher present, if needed a dispatcher can be plugged in.....

Patrol Boro cars are just that....cars assigned to the boro. They can be used for many functions. Usually the marked cars with the boro indicator are the Impact units. They work it specific precincts but are technically assigned to the boro and can be sent anywhere if needed. (rarely ever happens). They may also be used by the boros evidence collection team, community affairs officers or boro details.
