Looking through the archives and I could not find the answer to this. Are all of the NYPD transmitters located on top of the Empire State Building? I am down in the Village and there is a distinct difference in signal strength for the different radio zones. How directional are the transmitter antennas that are in use? Wattage?

howitzer,it's not just you.
Not only is there differences in signal strength among zones, notice that (zone 34-Queens 110-115 for example) there is noticeable differences between Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening as an example. My homeowner won't allow an external antenna but the signal clarity varies greatly with just the antenna provided on either my hand held or 785-D, inside or outside my home.

If I remember right, the transmitters are only about 40-50 watts because they are really only covering 3 precincts at the maximum. Although with the right radio I can pickup precincts in the Bronx from Staten Island.

If you search the FCC site, you can see where NYPD transmitter are. Like someone said, Pct tx's are local, usually a tall bldg in the area. Citywide freqs like SOD do have the main & backup antennas on skyscrapers in Manhattan.

SOD, HWY and other Citywide freqs have a Staten Island Freq for coverage on the Island, most of those antennas are located in Todt Hill (the highest point I believe)

From Jersey City I seem to pick up most of the NYPD freq's equally well. The Bronx is slightly weaker.
