Grrr @*#^, the noise comes thru the speaker of my Pro-2096, and of course when I use my external speaker the noise is more easily heard.

If your Pro-2096 is quiet and has no such noise then I guess I was unlucky enough to get a noisey one, but otherwise I really like this scanner so far, and if I was not in such a quiet environment I may not have noticed the noise.

Well I am glad to hear that a simple exchange will cure the problem, hopefully RS will be able to send a new one to my local store and I can exchange.

Thanks for checking yours for the Hum

Well I have found that my pro-96 does have a hum when it's scanning. It's not very noticable though. it's more like a very quiet carrier signal than a hum.

All scanners have a slight HISS when not receiving a signal. This is the noise from the audio amp that is apparently not being shut off when not receiving a signal. I don't think I have any scanner that doesn't do this.

Now, if it's coming from your power supply, that could cause it, too. The original poster didn't say how he was powering the scanner.

When my other non-digital Pro scanners are scanning and not on an active channel there is silence.

My other Scanners do not have a noticeable hiss/hum or noise.

the noise comes thru the speaker of my Pro-2096

I dont know what is causing the noise, I am using the supplied wall wart.

Update:

I called the Shack, and the person I was transfered to, was pretty confident the problem was with the power supply (wall wart).

A new Pro-2096 is headed to my house, and then I can return at the local store without incurring shipping charges.

I just checked my UPS traking and I will have my 2096 this afternoon when I get home. I think I am starting to like that Brown truck again.

First impression

Brought my PRO2096 home, and entered the two primary VHF frequencies used by my sheriffs department, without reading manual, and sounds very good.

Plugged into my computer and downloaded my primary file, 11th Folder, and now listening to everything that I could with my Pro 96.

No problems, no noise. Picking up airforce planes on the 200 and 300 MHz range without any problem. Listening to two planes that are over Seguin Texas which is about 20 miles from my house. Using stock antenna. Also picking up the LCRA 900 MHz trunked EDAC system.

CB reception with stock antenna is fair, but you must open the squelch to pick up anything but very close strong signals. Me and that ambient noise don’t get along.

Audio sounds really good. Back light on all the time is helpful due to the small size of the display. The size of the screen is a compromise to make it fit in a din opening in a vehicle. By the way, if you mount the scanner in a din, the black out cover of the scanner comes off. Be sure to save it as you may want to use the scanner as a desk model.

I know that some have reported problems, but I see nor hear any.

I wonder if the GRE team would take a look at reducing the number of function keys to make room for a bigger display. This would make computer programming mandatory, but in real life, I wouldn’t even try to program a modern scanner by hand. I am sure some people would object, but I believe that most owners are using software. I ended up with 3 serial cables that work. The 20-289, the one on GRE website for $14.95 and I also found the cable for my AOR8200 will work with the Pro96/2096, but that sucker was almost a hundred dollars.

Hello,

No problems with the 2096. Audio is fine. Sounds just like the PRO 96 but a little louder.

Thanks DonS for V1.36. :D

Hi Frank,

Nice and neat install. I have thought about installing the unit in the truck. It's been 6 years since I had a mobile in my vehicle.

Well the 2096 has come onto ebay. There is one unit with a 'Buy it Now' price of AUS $1,200 !!! (approx US$900)

A matter of making the keen pay top price. Will monitor to see if there is a mug out there who will pay such an inflated price. Who knows if I keep reading the posituve postings on the 2096 and about everyone else having one this may be my only opportunity to buy it here down under. We have no RS and our similiar store Tandy do not import the Pro 96 and doubt they will with the 2096

Thanks Dave,

Replaced a 2067 and needed slight modifications to the configuration. The installation is a double DIN so the scanner is mounted to the radio/cd player as was the 2067.

Hi Frank,

I have a double DIN too. I would need an aftermarket radio for the wife, that could be used with the factory 6 Disc CD Changer. My wife even suggested mounting it. :D

Hmmmmm

Not a bad setup...

If I get the fundage going.. I will have to install a professional rack for what I would need to do.

Motorola VHF Hi Band Mobile, PRO-2096, PRO-2051, and a CB.....

Still in the air about 2051 vs 2067, since the 2067 has alpha tags, and the 2051 is a mil air scanner..... though if I really had it going on itd be both....

My dream setup:

PRO-2096 for digital
PRO-2051 for Mil Air *would use the 2096 for it.. but its not designed to do it from go*
PRO-2067 for LTR, and conventional with the tags...
Of course the VHF for VFD work.
And the CB is self explanatory.

Just got done with the 2067 to 2096 swap over. Had to run the the new wires that come with the 96 its tip is bigger than the 67's. Now the 67 will be next to the computer. It is weird not having to press scan every time I turn on the radio when I get in my truck.

A 6 disk changer and radio will use a double won't it? Do you have a third DIN available for the scanner?

And a much brighter display. My 2067 is at work here at the PC also, and looks like a new scanner. I was gonna put it up for sale but may keep it.

Boy, add a cell to that list, and you'll be dangerous.

Hi Frank,

The Ford Factory AM/FM Tape Player takes up 2 DIN slots. The CD Changer is mounted in the center console. If I remove the factory radio, I would have 2 slots available. Just need to find an aftermarket radio that would work with the CD Changer. Or, I could use one of those center consoles used by emergency vehicles that would look OEM, and mount it in the console. Decisions, Decisions... :)
