Only hearing one side of conversation for EMS/Fire

This is probably a noob question but I only get the dispatch side of an EMS/Fire call - can anyone enlighten me as to why that is? (in NJ).

First, welcome to the forums. Please look around and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I just ask that you always use the "search" function prior to posting because many questions have already been asked and answered numerous times.

To answer your question, it depends on what agency. Some agencies have a dispatch only channel and operations are on a separate channel. If you can provide a little more detail, I may be able to answer your question better.

another possibility. some agencies use repeaters. the broadcast from the mobile or portable get re-broadcast, and come out so both side's can be heard. some agencie use simplex. the broadcast is radio to radio. not that powerfull.
