Hey, had a question for you all, has anyone ever ordered from scanner world? As much as i like to keep business in canada, i have become very dedicated to taking advantage of our ridicoulously strong dollar and ordering a BCD996 from the states for a MUCH lower price then its canadian counterparts. The reason i ask is obviously because of customs. I heard from someone that Scannerworld ships with USPS ground mail and that their customs fees are MUCH lower then UPS/Fed-EX who i know for a fact will rape u in the ass on a purchase like that....i am just afraid that if i take the risk of ordering the scanner for $550 USD after shipping fees that i am going to get killed by $200 worth of custom fees. However if USPS is much cheaper then i am all for it. Anyways, if anyone could let me know on this one it is mucho appreciated.

I ordered a BC246T on the 17th of June and got the radio on the 20th by UPS shipping not
the USPS. I don't know if this was because of living in the states or what. I just checked the latested catalog and it says for Canada, the minimum shipping charge is $ 26.00. It
also says "ask for S&H quote. It dosen't say what type shipping.

I have seen then cheaper $499 and shipping should be no more then $30usd As for Customs stay away from UPS as they charge you a fee of $45 alone just for handling your package. Customs is just taxes after your USD price is converted to CDN and then add the fee.. With USPS/Canada Post that fee is $6.95 not like UPS which is $45. So if your cost is $550 usd shipped with exchange would be $568 CDN approx now add your taxes which is again $85.20 + $6.95 = 660.15 CDN total again prices are approx. So your Customs will be around $90 to $100 if done with USPS/Canada Post I don't think you will find a cheaper rate the $7 to handle your package..

I would deal with http://www.national-electronics.com/ they will ship with USPS and are very good priced. And some companys will not ship here..... Maybe another option for shipping maybe Fed Ex ground but not sure of their fees..

FedEx/UPS Standard (aka Ground) services will ding you for all shipments that are above $60. You'll pay duties and taxes, plus a "brokerage" fee basically their service charge to clear customs for you. FedEx is semi-reasonable, UPS is insane. I once got billed $80 by UPS for $200 of WARRANTY REPLACEMENT batteries. All Air/express/overnight services are fine.

USPS will charge $5 on top of the duties/taxes for any service.

And don't get anyone started on claiming insurance with UPS or FedEx.

i've ordered lots from scannermaster, they even had the 396 on sale recently. They shipped USPS/Canada Post Express service, brokerage was $6 + % and all I did was call in my order.

Have also had them ship to my brother in the US and bill me, then he brings it up on his next visit.

I recently ordered my 996T from these guys

I used master card with no problem. Shipping was $32 US and I paid the applicable PST/GST when it arrived at the door with the same Master Card.

Shipping was with Global Express Mail, and there was no additional charges.

This was the second scanner I have bought from these guys, and was very happy with their service.

I'm betting they have a commercial account and a major shipping discount from UPS. I wonder if that discount is reflected in their shipping charges or adds to their profit margin.
Its not that they can't ship USPS, but that they won't. UPS brokerage charges are a massive rip-off for Canadian buyers.

The major complaint with USPS from most US shippers is the time they have to spend to ship the package. There's the trip to and from the Post Office and then the wait in line. With UPS, it's one call and the package is picked up at the office.

Some shippers will use USPS but will tack on a handling charge to recover the cost of the time.

Some will wait until they have enough packages before the go to the Post Office.

Others, such as Scanner Master, just refuse to ship USPS.

We used to have the same problem in Canada with people who used Bus Parcel Express or Canada Post. It saved them money but cost us the loss of an employee while they went to pickup the parcel. If things were busy, the parcel would sit.

And thats understandable from a time/cost point of view. I assumed that the US postal service offered a pickup service. Where I work, Canada Post delivers in the morning, and picks up in the afternoon. Perhaps USPS does not do this. Its a pity because commercial couriers will charge you $45.00 Cdn. to tell you that you owe $12.00 GST. By post, you just pay the twelve bucks when you pick up the parcel.

Hi,
I bought a BCD996 a month ago at the following store, and I paid by credit card (paypal). The scanner was shipped by USPS.

Canada Post didn't even do this where I worked.

Package notices were dropped off at the mailbox (superboxes) and we had to go to the postal outlet in the mall to pick them up. Outgoing shipments were made at the same postal outlet. Once a package notice was dropped off, you would have to wait until 1300 before the package was available. Once you arrived, the line was usually out the store. You were at least 45 minutes to pick up one package.

This was in a small town called Mississauga after they shut down the retail counter at the Streetsville post office. DHL, UPS and Purolator all dropped off in the morning and picked up in the afternoon. It's no wonder we started telling our customers that any packages shipped via Canada Post were subject to a handling charge and delay.

Smaller town seems to have faired better and I think this is the case in rural America as well. Outfits in smaller towns such as Grove Enterprises can stop by the local post office and the wait time is small.

I collect my personal mail at the local post office and shipping out packages takes about 5 minutes. Picking them up takes about 5 minutes as well.

HI,
How much are you willing to pay for a slightly used BCD996 (bought 2 months ago)?
