I came across some frequencies the Commonwealth is licensing, 4 UHF pairs state wide for interops. "PA Commonwealth - Interoperability - Public Safety Pool, Conventional, 453.2125, 453.4625, 453.7125, 453.8625, 458.2125, 458.4625, 458.7125, 458.8625." Maybe to be used with counties that have gone with UHF instead of 800 ? Has anyone heard anything about the State's plans for these new freqs?

It is my understanding that PA's Radio Project office was in the process of placing interop base stations on the Opensky Network. Several scanner pages have shown that some testing in the eastern side of the state has been conducted on NLEEF (155.475).

Some of the interop that the state indicated would be done is interop freqs on VHF/UHF and 800.

Your statement regarding 800 is a little confusing. There are several agencies in PA on 800 already that can not talk on or via the Opensky Network and will require conventional 800 bases at the interop sites to allow communication with the state. Fayette County, PA has been running a Smartnet Type II 800 Trunked System since 1995, Westmoreland County, PA has been running an Apco 25 800 Trunked System for the last three-four years or so. City of Pittsburgh has a Motorola Trunked System of sorts for public works (not familiar with other 800 users in PA). There are many ways to provide interop with these existing systems one of which is to put repeaters in place for the NSPAC Interop Channels on the 800 Band and reprogram several thousand radios with them to allow seamless communications. Although the state has not "officially" notified the Comm Centers of their intent regarding the interop stuff other than "they are working on it"

Thanks

Dr. Dave: Thanks. Guess we will have to list them in PA soon too!

Tony: Sorry to hear of your confusion. I am very aware of interop on 800 and VHF / NERF currently (and I monitor them). However, many counties around me are not going to 800. As you may know, Lebanon, York and Dauphin (with rumors Lancaster may join them) are completing new systems on 450 / 460 / 500 MHz. The UHF freqs PA is in the process of licensing could allow interops between Commonwealth agencies and others not on 800. I was trolling for an "official" response from someone connected with the Commonwealth.

Not a problem.

I work at Fayette County 911 as one of the administrators (handle the computers, network, and telephony equipment). Since I found out the uhf freqs are in the process of being licensed, I am planning an email up the food chain to check. PEMA and the state radio project office treats most of the comm centers like mushrooms- - - in the cold and in the dark . . . . . - - - in terms of giving out information unless the question is specifically asked. . . . .

My confusion has been that many folks -assume- that an agency operating on 800 can talk to anyother agency using 800. This is a false assumption when the 800 systems are different platforms and require the same interop gateways and links as needed for vhf/uhf/low band.

If I find out any info I will post more.

Later,
Tony

When you have two systems next to each other using the same type of system, I don't assume they can talk to each other :D

Alot of the interoperability between adjacent but different 800 (or 400/500/700) MHz trunked systems occurs on conventional non-trunked frequency pairs or simplex channels. Obviously the different methods of trunking would not permit use of a common talkgroup between the systems.

Chester County PA (EF Johnson) and Montgomery County PA (Motorola) have some common conventional "Interops" frequency pairs in common.
