I have a Pro-96 and have thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was listening to PG County today and every once in a while under the
EDACS frequencies (not sure if it is north or south county)
Seemed to be under cover ops or surveillance, have heard them before, very free speech and very entertaining. I would love to know what i was hearing. thanks!!

I've also heard some...free speech...on PGFD channel 8/PGPD channel 6. I'm NOT in favor of surveillance being conducted IN THE CLEAR, on a REPEATED channel. This seems, to me, to fly in the face of comsec (communications security).

I actually scan the Command Channel (PGFD 8) in my buggy and I heard this too the other day. Around the station I stay on Ch. 1 and don’t scan. They do it all the time. You would think they would at least use "B mode" (talk around) when doing Spec. Ops. but hey that's PG County for ya!

I'll tell ya what's a hoot though, listen to the regular PGPD channels and if you're close enough to hear them on talk around it can be good entertainment. I heard a G sector car inquire of the thumping on Landover Rd the other morning. Good times!

The only reason I can think of they wouldn't use B mode would be the range. When you bypass the repeater, as you know, you're limiting yourself to a lower power output (usually either 1 or 4 watts, in the case of the UHF Jedis, depending on how the radio's programmed; mine, I can control via keypad).

I had heard they'd be doing surveillance one night, and damned if they weren't doing it, and making geographic references, too ("He's in front of the Checkers'", and such).

Isn't this one reason there's the north and south side EDACS system? Or at least have part time available encryption on those portables. Go for a DOJ grant; the investigators are sworn police officers!

Hey folks its no different than any other Jurisdiction. Look at Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Carroll County, Frederick County none of those Jurisdictions have encryption on there trunked systems and they talk in the clear all the time rebroadcasting it to their county and abroad of sensitive stuff of this nature it should be of no surprise that PG does it.

These newer radio sytems like Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Cecil, UMESC all either have encryption or Pro-voice and use it when doing this kind of surveillence.

Its just a part of life untill these jurisdictions can afford or come up with something better.

800mhz is wave team, auto theft TF, lincoln 100 units (district 1), and union units (gang unit, auto theft... etc.... daily... Once an a while another task force will use the 800 mhz just to stay off of ch 7 and 8.

Before Montgomery went to their TRS system they used to be rather interesting too. Especially after they picked up several UHF freqs that AACo dropped when they went to 800. Unlike fire calls I tend to avoid areas that I hear the surveillence in. You never know what could happen when they try to make the arrrest.

A PD by me has been doing this for years, surveillance channel in the clear and off the repeater for years. They use code words, but after listening for a bit I could figure them all out. They should encrypt it, but i don't want them to because it's my favorite channel in my scanner- in use almost every night.
