For no other reason than I was in the area (coming home from Newmarket). I drove by the Primrose Fleetnet Tower, so I decided to grab a pic. Here you go.

I saw a tower that looked the same on Highway 9 (near 400?) today, but see none listed on any maps that would indicate it was a Fleetnet tower. Any ideas? It wasn't one of those white-toothbrush-looking York Region ones either...

Cheers,

ES

That's not the Primrose tower. Primrose is at the junctions of Hwy 10/24 and Hwy 89. Quite a few miles to the northwest of the tower you were at. I'm pretty sure the tower you snapped the pic of is located near Hwy 50 and Hwy 9.

Another problem is there are no VHF antennas on that tower. Hard to be a Fleetnet tower without any VHF antennas.

If it's the tower on Hwy 9 near Hwy 50, it's a Rogers Wireless tower.

Those are cellphone towers not Fleetnet towers.

Oh well, nice blue sky behind the tower, whoever's it is.

I couldn't see any VHF antennas; there are usually three pairs
of vertically-stacked folded dipoles, and they'd have to be at or
near the top of the tower.

Generally, a dead give-away of a Fleetnet tower is that you will find 3 sets of a 2-bay VHF folded dipole for RX and a lower set of 2-bay folded dipoles for TX.

I think Andy has some pics from a scouting mission in Zone 3 of a perfect example of what a typical Fleetnet antenna setup looks like.

I only snapped this one fuzzy pic of the Watershed tower. With only a single microwave antenna, you can tell that it's at the end of a chain.

You will also notice that most towers have a side mounted 210-C2 for MOH PCOM and OPP Sim 11.

Are we sure that's what the other 210-C2 is for? If you look in the pic that Andy posted, there are two 210-C2's at the top - these are for RX, and the lower single 210-C2 just above the ice guard is for TX. That's what a BMR guy told me when I asked what the story was with the other antenna, he said that all the Fleetnet sites use separate antennas for TX and RX.

That was my information as well.

All Fleetnet trunking channels are on the top antennas and the sidemounted antenna is support for Sim 11 and PCOM.

I don't think one antenna could support a large site like Edgar or King City. The SD212 from Sinclair is only rated at 300W. That would mean a site like Edgar could only run 30W on each transmitter.

Instead they split the channels between the top antennas. I think Edgar has 3 antennas top mounted.

Interesting...that makes sense.

So how would they re-use some of the NOR sites then, which only have one antenna? Or, I assume they'd just re-use those sites where there aren't as many channels as King or Edgar.

Most ex-OPP sites were turned up with the existing antennas which were likely SRL235-2's which could handle 500w. Most sites in southern Ontario had such a configuration. It's likely that Northern Ontario was built the same.

Moving Edgar over to the 3 stacked 210C2's, they've now got 900w capability.

I didn't say it was a fleetnet tower, i was referring to the York Region system towers...the white ones....and not the white ones that are for cell.

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused.

Your first message asked about the non-white, non-toothbrush, non-York Region towers around Hwy 9 and Hwy 400. If I'm correct, those are cellphone towers. Fleetnet does not have any towers near that area.

Your second message now says you are referring to the York Region system towers which are white.

I didn't think there were any around Hwy 9 and Hwy 400.

My mistake.

This is the Guelph West tower. There are two dipoles just below the third set of guy wires, plus three dipole pairs at the tower top. It would seem that it's always overcast when I find these sites...

Yup, that's the Primrose tower.

Bell Mobility Cellular has antennas just below the single sidemounted 210C2 antenna.
