I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any traffic on 200+MHz air frequencies around here and how to make them come in better? Also if anyone knew of the local center frequencies i mean like Jacksonville or Miami center i think ?

I have a pro-106, pro-164, and uniden BC250D

Aircraft frequencies

I didn't see anything listed for my area or what area's frequencies i should be listening to. I live in the tampa bay area and i did not see any specific channels for that area, i know there is a lot of aircraft around here though with 2 major air ports and a major air force base just around the corner.

When i use my rubber duck antenna that came with my pro 106 i can hear plenty of air craft but no towers or center operators. I live about 30 miles from Tampa international and St Pete Clw airport. I also use my global antennuater

The reason i was asking about the center frequencies is because i know they have higher power because they have to transmit longer distances than the towers so i would imagine i should be able to hear the center operators but i don't. I also am never able to pick up any UHF aircraft frequencies any help with better monitoring for that?

I dont think it is because they run higher power that is the reason.....I think you will hear the aircraft due to their altitude and better line of sight to your receiving point.

I live in North Pinellas county (Palm Harbor) and hear activity on the center freqs, but only the aircraft and not the ground stations. There are a few remote communication outlets in the area for Tampa and the best way to understand what freqs are used for which areas is to obtain a sectional chart we use for flight planning and nav. On these charts you will see different frequencies to the North, South, East & West of Tampa. These approach frequencies will give you the best chance to come close to listening to a center and hearing both sides. From where I am at, I can hear a number of the VHF freqs for Tampa.

This was just shared with me by MDMONITOR and is a very comprehensive list for you to experiment with.

Vince,

Here's a list of the current VHF/UHF milair freqs heard by one listener in central Florida. You should be able to hear some of these freqs, especially the offshore Sealord and warning areas.

Our old friend Jack Nesmith checks in with his military frequency list monitored during June from his central Florida QTH.

Aircraft frequencies

Thank you that was very informative. The only time i have ever heard anything in the way of UHF is on the USCG air channels but very rarely and I can only hear the aircraft. The problem i have with the UHF band is interference, overload sensitivity, and birdies on my pro-106. I also tried with the Uniden BC250D without any better luck in this range still same problem. I will not be able to put an outdoor antenna outside so that is not an option for me.

Question what do you use as a antenna for your monitoring of the aircraft band in VHF or UHF?

I hear aircraft frequently in the area of the 134135MHz range could this be the center channels? I have noticed that the database lists most of the frequencies in that range.

I got really good results with one of these.
I made it using spare automotive wire. Cut two lengths. Then I took a spare cable with BNC connector to attach to scanner, spliced one wire to each conductor from the BNC cable and attached to scanner.

Something else to consider is a temp/portable antenna. Something you can place on a pole or tripod or home made stand for easy setup/teardown for when you want to monitor, or mount something in your attic.
Just some things to consider.
