Iv have read many forums regarding pirates and I even posted one my self but I don't know alot about them. I would like to know who dose it and why? because most of the forums I read where about Spanish noises. So why do they do it ? what equipment do they use? What is the most popular freq rang that they pirate at?

Thank you

Depends on what pirates you are talking about. If you are refering to shortwave pirates, most of the activity I've heard over the years is around 6955 KHz +/- 15 KHz.

As for the sea pirates, them jokers are all over the SW band.

The satellite pirates are in the 200-300 MHz areas.

HOW do they do it? The just pick a frequency and transmit. Or maybe I'm missing something in your question.

I always heard a Pirate looked at 40, which I would assume to be "meters."

If they're third generation pirates, sons of sons of sailors for example, they "do it" by staying one step ahead of the jailer.

fuzzyscanner - Where is your post about "pirates"? I'd like to read it.
If you want to be a pirate broadcaster, transmit illegally. That's it! Get a kit from Ramsey and go FM or buy amateur gear and "bootleg" a call, or build an AM transmitter and play music, etc,, etc. Just stay one step ahead of the jailer, like w5cyc wrote. I'd advise you to consider the risk/reward factors before doing so.

I did the pirate FM stuff back when I was in high school and I had a blast doing it. I had a modified Ramsey Kit that went for miles. Oh, the fun I had there. I'm not sure how much Canada frowns on unlicensed broadcasting but I would think it's frowned apon there as well.

If we're talking about pirates on HF and 'schedules' of sorts - it depends. HF pirates in Europe tend to announce their schedules ahead of time (sometimes), while that rarely happens here (for obvious reasons). There is a whole sub culture of folks in HF DXing that chase pirates - and you can see a few links about this in the Shortwave Broadcast section of...

There's a semi-regular column in the NASWA Journal and even in MT devoted to the subject, if one were to know these things.....73s Mike

In college, one of my buddies had a few watt station that he broadcast outside the dorm window. It covered the campus and then some, but i'm sure never enough to arouse suspicion. We just played directly from an old laptop running winamp with a 8GB harddrive. Whoever wanted to hear something different would just go into his room and change the playlist or song. Me, being a mischevious little pain in the arse, would put one GWAR song on repeat or mix in J-pop into an otherwise mainstream rock lineup. It was truely "free radio" as we would just allow whoever to pick the song directly. We also had experimented with controlling it remotely and different outputs. It also nicely goofed with the flourecent lights.

The magazine Popular Communications used to have a monthly article on pirate stations. You might want to try them.

Popular wireless message board www.popularwireless.com they love to talk about bubble pack pirates, people using the hand held gmrs radios you can buy at walmart. They are actually frs/gmrs radios but people don't get the license for the gmrs and that irritates the popular wireless people.
