I've always wondered if the police use Radio Silence at DUI Check Points. I've been listening to my scanner while driving and never heard a word spoken about a check point but I end up driving through one. Do they choose to keep silent for stealth purposes.....? Has anyone ever had any experience with this such as a police officer telling that they do keep a low profile at these traffic stops

They probably go to simplex so you wouldn't hear them unless you were close. However, I did ask an officer once about seatbelt checkpoints, I asked since people knew they were coming up, wouldn't they know to put on their seatbelt? Officer's answer: They're not that smart.

May use simplex, but if it is a conventional type system and your not hearing anything its probably because there is not much to talk about...when something is said over the radio it is usually on the records channel for DL info and the like.

Around my area (Tulsa) they actually publicize them like 2 weeks in advance on the local media and STILL they end up with a ton of DUIs

like someone else said, they may use simplex. also, they may use another TG if they are on a trunked system. they may just run the plates and licenses through one of their unit computers. yet another thought is since they are all working close to each other, they don;t need to use radios. AND another...Nextel's.

They are currently using a Motorola Type II Smartnet Trunking system. I never hear anything about the checkpoint what so ever. Sometimes they do post it in the local paper but mostly it's a suprise setup.

What traffic is there to hear at a DL checkpoint other that DL's and tags being ran?

Not sure...... I guess Officers talking about someone who seemed intoxicated and didn't pass the breathalizer test. That's why I am interested, because I feel like I may be missing conversation. I'm not sure what is said at a check point, that's why I was curious......
I was thinking they may just try to remain silent to keep a low profile.....

at the road block the officers are usually close enough to just talk without the radio. I worked a lot of roadblocks and don't remember using a radio except to tell chase units when a car makes a U turn upon seeing the roadblock.

Here the PD uses Ch. 3 which is usually just a chat channel, and the So uses Ch4, same thing just a chat channel on other nights. And they only say "I'll be 10-8 (in service) for the special... 76 (en rout) to the 10-72 (roadblock)"

Just out of curiosity...

Is it illegal to make said U turn upon seeing a checkpoint? This is assuming, of course, that U turns aren't already illegal in the jurisdiction.

Next time, when I go through a check point, I may just drive up the road half a mile or so and park. Then, see if I hear
anything like you said occurs on the talk channel. I'm sure some form of communication goes on.

Here's what the Chicago police notices look like:

It would be nice if Charlotte would post check point info...... I guess that would ruin the surprise.

im pretty sure it isn't legal to make u turns if you see a checkpoint, assuming it is legal to do so in the first place, but someone making an U turn when they see a dui checkpoint might lead the officers to believe that the said vehicle and person were trying to avoid the checkpoint for one reason or another. it is just plain suspicious and stupid.

in general, what do yall think the percentage of people that drive also have scanners? regardless, if you keep up with a scanner, you are probably smart enough to also keep up with the news, so you would probably know about the advertised roadblock ahead of time. and trust me, there are plenty of dui drivers for leo's to catch even when not being "stealth" and having every emergency light on every vehicle turned on during a checkpoint.
