The website said this the past few years and there were still problems at the checkpoint. I wish scanners were listed explicitly in the allowed items list.

yes they need to make it clear or not, whether scanners or other electronic devices(i.e. ham radios) are allowed or not.Because two years ago I went on the saturday,no problem going through.Sunday TRIED to go through and was one step away from getting gunfaced.Although I presented my fire dept. ID,which didn't matter because I was not there in a official manner.I was that I might be able to hear sensitive info such as MPs and the control tower.Yeah and all this took place at FedEx field. So the best of luck to you.

you are right tbccfc2 that on the prohibited lists scanners should be put on there. i was hassled last year on saturday when i got to the checkpoint at fedex field. that will turn away people like me who like to bring the scanner on the base to listen to the planes. i am not there to listen to the security forces on the base.

For the past couple of years, I have e-mailed Capt. Anna Carpenter in Public Affairs at Andrews regarding whether scanners are OK at the JSOH. Both times, she has said they were fine. I am planning to e-mail her again this year to make sure nothing has changed.

If the scanner/radio is not specifically prohibited, there's nothing stopping you from placing it at the bottom of your camera bag that has other (permitted/normal) items on top of it or totally obscured by your shirt/windbreaker, etc. If someone went to the time & effort to write out a list of specific items that are prohibited, it is reasonable to *assume* that if a scanner is not listed, it means scanners are allowed & thus you're conducting yourself perfectly within reason (though they can always refuse entry to you without much of a reason).

I know someone who got his Yaesu VX-8 onto Nellis for last year's 'Aviation Nation' (scanners/two-way radios prohibited) last year by putting it at the bottom of his backpack (which was allowed) & then used psychology -- the intentional clutter of numerous reasonable & permitted things in the backpack, and engaging the approx. 20 year old Security Forces Airman in friendly & humerous dialog to distract her focus during the 10 seconds spent dealing with the person & poking around inside the backpack.

Like TSA, it's basically security-theater -- busy-work for the poor SFs dealing with the masses at the checkpoint & ignorant members of the public feeling proud at how 'secure' the installation is, when the reality is often that if you wanted to sneak something on-base, you just toss it over the single fence separating the dirty/sterile areas or get a vendor's pass & hide it amongst the crap for sale that you're bringing onto the base the day before.

As a whole, DOD has their heads up their asses regarding radio-devices -- there's no formal DOD policy, sometimes it's not listed as a prohibited item on the event's web page, but is on the list on a sign at the checkpoint, or vice-versa. If they think that COMINT via a scanner poses a tactical or strategic threat, it's up to THEM to properly secure that info via encryption.

If you want to be a good citizen & follow all their rules, that's great! Just get someone to stream one or more of the base/airshow freqs you want to hear, and listen to them with your smartphone via the stream.

By the way, lest there be any confusion, the JSOH is this weekend - not the 20th. It doesn't look all that great for the weather - showers both Saturday and Sunday...best regards..Mike

Discretion is advised. If you walk up to the gate with a half dozen scanners on your belt, you will probably be detained for a while, maybe not even allowed in. As always, use your head, and don't advertise. ;)

Just a suggestion but once you get the email reply I would print a copy and take it with you. It couldn't hurt to have it in case someone at Fed-Ex tries to tell you the opposite.

OK, here's the latest information. Just sent this to the Scan-DC mailing list:

For the past couple of years, I've been in e-mail contact with Capt. Anna Carpenter in Public Affairs at Andrews. She has said both years that scanners were permissible at the Open House. This year, when trying to e-mail her, I got an automated reply that her tour was over or something to that effect. So, I tried to e-mail the Public Affairs Office at Andrews. No response. Today I called Public Affairs. Couldn't get anybody on the phone, so asked the base operator to transfer me to the Visitor Center number. The woman there said scanners are not allowed at the show. I told her about Capt. Carpenter's e-mails, and she decided me to transfer me to security/law enforcement. Spoke to a gentleman there, and he said they weren't allowed at first either. I told him about Capt. Carpenter's e-mails and how they were not on the prohibited items list, and he said if I wanted to bring them and possibly be hassled, then fine. Or I could
not bring them.

So that's the story for this year - I don't really have a definitive answer. I have had good success in previous years getting through security at the Branch Avenue Metro, so I think I'll probably give it a go again. If anyone wants a copy of the e-mails from previous years, I'd be happy to send them.

Oh, yes. I have all the e-mails on my iPhone with a label in Gmail so I can pull them up right away.

The lack of a consistent, well-publicized policy doesn't reflect well on the base personnel there. Prohibiting people from enjoying their listening hobby at the same time as watching the airshow only alienates visitors and makes the base organizers look foolish.

The director of the airshow is listed as Mr. Robert Yarbrough (jsoh@afncr.af.mil) on the airshow website. Anybody have constructive thoughts as to what would be good to say in a email to him?

Does anybody live close enough to the base to set up an online scanner that we can listen to via smartphone? Say with the air boss frequency and a few of the Thunderbird freqs.?

What are some good freqs to plug into my scanner (PRO-106) for the show?

Also still can't understand why a scanner would be denied or a two-way radio if they allow cell phones.

thats suprising that they say nothing about this on the prohibited items list. they should make an announcement about this on the website for next year.
