Thanks everyone for your replies, suggestions, input, etc...this info should make it easier for others, myself included, to find a reputable place to make our next purchase.

Lets try to keep this going.

I have purchased some radio gear from Amazon.com. Their service has been great. I'm going to try HRO for my next purchase.

A friend told me to never deal with Amazon. He tried to return something that was broken and "they are only the middlemen" and he had to call their supplier or some crap. I dunno how true the story is, but it sounded practical at the time.

This sounds right. I wonder how good http://www.pricegrabber.com is for finding good prices? Never thought of it until now, I use them all the time. Of course you would have to type the specific radio in that you are looking for or "radio scanners" otherwise you will get a bunch of computer scanners.

Note: just typed in bc296d for the hell of it and got outrages prices. :x

Pricegrabber is great for a lot of things. Customer service is okay. A buddy bought a set of infinity speakers from them, had the center channel blow out on him. Sent it back with a return authorization, they received the item, but it is in a UPS box somewhere in their warehouse. They needed the tracking number from him, which he lost after the first month. Then, they call him up, think he is trying to scam them for an extra speaker. They finally agreed to ship him out a new center channel, even though they can't locate the one he returned.

 Pricegrabber I believe, does not sell any thing but web time, I guess you could say. They will have comparisons on a particular product you are looking for with the specific companys that may have that product and may be affiliated with pricegrabber.

Another good place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is Amateur Electronic Supply.

You can drive there and pick up the scanner with no waiting time for delivery.

Nevermind you are right, it was Etronics.com for that story above.

We do most of our shopping online between the two places.

Communications Electronics. I bought my BC898T from them by telephone. Great to deal with and got the unit for $199.95, shipping included. Had it in less than a week. Website is usascan.com

Well, Amazon are the middle man for some of the items they offer on their website. Items sold by third party sellers are usually marked as such. Anything on the Amazon Market Place is sold by third party sellers. There are no surprises or fine print to read. It says so right on the checkout page when you buy an item. Their exchange and return policies are clearly stated, so I'm not sure why your friend was upset when he had to deal directly with the supplier.

I've purchased 4 items that were from such sellers and have yet to have a problem. The service is usually very good and timely. Most of these sellers have very good feedback and I usually read the return polices when buying from a third party on Amazon.

The only return I did make was of an item that Amazon themselves carry. They sent me a a refund as soon as they received the item. No questions asked.

EDIT: So your friend had to call the supplier? Did he get the matter resolved?

Yeah, he got the matter resolved. It just seems uh, stupid to order from one place and then have to deal with someone else. I usually don't read the fine print, I don't think most people do. Not a good habit, but in the event that I am dropping more than $100, I will read the fine print just to make sure of everything.

I know if you asked my mom to return the IPods we all got for X-mas she would call Amazon and then I guess they would pull the "we are the middle man it is clearly stated" stuff. Just going to show I don't think most people read everything.
