Eventually, depending on funding and getting the other contiguous 3 counties on board.
I wouldn't rush out and buy a digital scanner any time soon. (4-5 years?)

Sooner than that. Funding is a sure thing (the fire bond passed). The other three counties have nothing to do with it.

But, the 700MHz P25 system is online now. Granted, it's still being configured and activated, but 4-5 years is definitely too long to wait. By the middle of 2011 a variety of bureaus (and parts thereof) will be migrated.

Look for the specialty details from PPB to be the first to move to the 700MHz system.

Does any one know if the system will be be 96% unencrypted much like now? There few tgs on current systen thats encrypted. With new radios, there always want to use encrypten.

Unfortunately, I think the 700 system is going to be mostly encrypted (at least to begin with). The 800 system does not support encryption, which is why the City started to undertake this upgrade (well, one of many reasons).

The early adopters are almost certainly going to be encrypted. Heck, they're even using encryption on TECH NET and another test talkgroup (of unknown utilization - 40000) almost full time.

Other new system that will leave local scanner hobbiest finding new hobby. I can understand having records/data TGs and 3 or 4 tac tgs encrypted but, to encrypted almost all of the system, is slap in face to hobbiest that listen to the system, and who pay taxes and dont break the law.

Doubt they care. The unlawful actions of a few dictate the rules that the rest of us have to follow. Maybe someday those of us that ARE lawful will be able to have a background check, pay a fee, and be able to decode encrypted transmissions, but I doubt it.
