Anyone else having this problem? So far I have had 2 go bad, the other was on the 996P2. It kills any nearby AM radio and also is killing nearby wireless internet. I have a box full of old wall warts at 12v but am afraid to use them because they read as high as 16 V DC on the voltmeter.

No problem as the devices in the scanner that are connected directly to the DC jack can handle at least 24 volt, but if it goes up to 18v the protection diod in the scanner will shortcircuit the powerline.

Your voltage reading is common on cheap power supplies. They rely on circuitry in the radio to lower the voltage to the required amount. If you check a 6 volt supply, it read up to 9 volts. You can buy a good power supply with controls for varying the voltage, but they cost considerably more for an accurate one.

Well upon that bombshell I have added some ferrites to my wall wart and wifi dongle and moved them both far from the radio. Maybe the BER will improve. I have noticed that the receiver will receive with the antenna removed which means the power and/or USB are not well isolated and whatever signals and noise they pull in, the receiver will have to contend with.
