Powering an R-1000

I have a Kenwood R-1000 receiver which I would like to use at our campground where no AC current is available. I would like to use four 18650 lithium ion batteries hooked in series to power it. Will this be enough to power the unit for at least a couple of hours?

Why not get a 7A/h 12volt gel cell and do it properly - you could even charge it from a regulated solar panel.

You can wire 18650 s in series parallel configuration such as 3 series string each consisting of 2 (ore more) parallel cells to get more runtime as needed. There are cheap battery management boards on eBay which will safely configure whatever you need. You do need a charger that is compatible with lithium ion charge profile.

I never like running any cells in parallel - there's a danger that the first cell to get discharged will get reverse charged and overheat/explode/leak with dire consequences. You can protect them with diodes but then you'll get a voltage drop across the diodes.

Maybe so, but if you drive a Tesla or have a high capacity lithium ion pack, it is commonly done. That is what BMS is for. Two cells in parallel wont damage each other by reverse polarity. it cant, wont happen..
