After someone told me a Prince William Co dispatcher kept saying 'OK' as opposed to '10-4' I gave it a listen. It seems that Prince William has switched to plain language. And today I noticed for the first time the Fairfax Co FD dispatcher using international phoenetics for the channels rather than names like Baker. Some units are still using the names. Maybe changing to plain language too?

Very good chance. It takes them some time to stop using it because they have been so used to it for years (decades in some cases.)

Most of the agencies around here have been 10 code free (except the occasional slip up) for months now.

The reason for the change, with a possible exception here and there, is money. Homeland Security has issued a dictum mandating in part the use of plain English and the discontinuance of using 10 codes by public service users. No request for Homeland Security monies (i.e., grants, etc.) will be approved unless the requesting public service user is certified to be in compliance with Homeland Security policies.

Interesting, I've been away from the Commonwealth for many moons. Interesting
that a B or E = a Burglary up there. Here in NC, there are two Burglaries, First
Degree = entering a residence in the night when the sleeping quarters are
occupied and Second Degree=
entering a residence at night that the sleeping quarters aren't occupied.
Every thing else is a Breaking OR (not and) Entering.

I hope that the dispatcher interchanging the terms doesn't make a difference
up there for the responders.

I ride out in Goochland and we're completely plain text on the Fire side - not even code 2 or code 3 - but Sheriff is laden with 10-codes still...Only little bit I know is 10-38 and as long as I don't hear my 10-28 after it, I'm happy. :-D

Yeah just about everything is plain language now (as stated here its all because of funding.) I knew just about all the 10 codes before they stopped using them. That is except for Prince George. They had theirs all different. Which is another part of the reason for going to plain language. In the case of anyone having to work together you don't want 10-xx here to mean 10-yy to this person. Which is what gets me, the purpose of 10 codes when they were first created was to have a universal code set. Different departments had to make their own versions of them though which caused confusing when they had to work with each other.
