I purchased a RS Pro 106 scanner in January 2011. Recently, I noticed dust accummulating under the glass of the display. The only thing I could find in the forum was a comment by John_M that he took his apart to clean(carefully).

After jumping through some hoops, I managed to get through to the RS repair center and found out that something like this is NORMAL and not covered. I can send it back for cleaning and be charged for it.

I was able to blow some compressed canned air around the edges of the glass and remove the dust from the glass. However, the dust is most likely still somewhere in the unit.

Has anyone had this problem and any tips/ideas for prevention.
Is the glass supposed to be sealed to the case?

many thanks

My 106 also has some specs under the glass. It doesn't really bother me and have made no attempt to clean it, I'm good at taking things apart but putting them back together in working condition...well not so good ! It's annoying because you keep trying to clean it off everytime it catches your eye. My other radios have the same problem. Electronics are a dust magnet. The speaker grille is another hang out joint for dust. I've put some screen protector on the display, but it's just for preventing minor scratches, won't prevent dust from going underneath. Don't blow the dust off with your mouth, I think we're all guilty of that, that's probably how it gets under there ! There are small electronic vacuum cleaners with various attachments that might help keep it clean. Why blow when you can give it a good suck !

I also failed to mention that the dust is really evident when the display is viewed in direct sunlight.
I was able to compress air around the edges of the glass. This tells me that the glass is not sealed well.
Wondering is that is normal.
thanks for the input

Lay the radio on a terry cloth towel, remove the battery cover and the battery tray and then remove the four screws from the radio back. The back cover comes right off. I blew into the radio around the display and almost all the white dust specs came out. I put the cover back on and put the batteries in and all was perfect again.
When putting the screws back just have a light hand at it as they only need to make contact with the cover and a touch more of a turn. Nothing will come apart or fall out of the radio doing this so don't fear opening it up.

Rob,
Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a try after my warranty is over. Don't want it to void my warranty. I also have a protective shield to prevent scratches, but it doesn't prevent the dust.
What is annoying is that I can blow around most of the dust by aiming the air at the edges of the glass. Of course it is not meant to be waterproof, but at least it should provide some restriction to this dust.
again, thanks for the tips....steve
