It sounds like a problem with your wal-wart or the plug that fits into the radio. It is made to take the batteries out of the circuit to power the radio when plugged into another power source.

Also I assume you know that the yellow battery holder should only be used with rechargeable Batts.

Yes I have the rechargable batteries in the yellow holder. The plug I got at the shack with the scanner so there is something wrong with the plug? It really suck that i just got the scanner and now can not use it.

Powering up Pro 106

Sorry to hear about your problems!
I've had my 106 for a couple years now and it's the best scanner I've ever owned.
Make sure your power supply input plug pin for the scanner power socket is set right............... (+) for centre pin and (-) for barrel. My power supply is a Nexxtech 9.0VDC, 0.8A

Good luck

If the radio works on batteries then chances are very good, as mentioned above, that the issue lies with the wall wart and/or adapter plug you got with the wall wart. First, insure that the adapta plug is Type "C". The wrong size plug will fit in the radio but not make contact with the power jack properly. I know because I tried it with 4 different plugs that fit OK and did disconnect the batteries but didn't power up the radio. Second, as was mentioned above, insure that the jack is plugged in to the adapter cord to make sure the tip (center connector) is +. Last, make sure you have the proper adapter that provides 9 volts @ 600 ma (or more ma).

Whatever battery carrier, black or yellow, is in or not in the radio has absolutely no bearing on powering up the radio from the AC adapter. The battery power is totally disconnected when plugged into an AC adapter. There is an additional contact on the yellow rechargeable holder that also allows power from the adapter to provide a charge voltage to the rechargeable batteries but that's all.

One final warning when you do sort out the adapter issue, don't recharge batteries in the scanner. Can damage the batteries as well as the scanner as there is absolutely no battery charge smarts in the 106. Plenty in the forums about this topic and some users have had that damage.

Use a 9V 500ma charger, with adapta plug "B" (which if a better fit) and make sure the "+" symbol on the plug is next to the word "TIP" on the cable.

I use the same power adapter on my Pro-106 and Pro-96. I use a Radio Shack 9v 300MHa power adapter with a "B" tip and make sure that I have it set to a positive tip. If you reverse the polarity it won't power the scanner and could fry it... Waiting to see if the problem was with the wall adapter or if you received a defective scanner.

Doug is our resident Radio Shack guru. He knows best on the Adapta Plug. Sounds like the "B" is what you need, not "C".

Very Happy

Got it fixed today. Went back to the shack and told them my proublem, they didnt seam to know anything about scanners but with a little trouble shooting with my help we found the proublem. The guy there tryed two different pro 106 with my power adapter the all did the samething. He try to tell me that they were supposed to be like that but I didnt agree with his answer. He then got another power adapter that was 500ma because he said the 800ma that I had was to high. It did nothing. Anyways to make a long story short after trying a few other thing I asked him if it could be the tip he then got the correct tip and wa la it worked. Should have known the thing that they gave me for free would be the proublem. I had to even show him how to plug the tip in correctly. Got it on now and been listing for a couple of hours and I love it. I belive this is the best scanner I have ever had. I would deffinently reccomend the Pro 106 to others just make sure and get the correct tip for your adapter. Thanks alot for all the replys who would have though it could be something so simple.

What he said was like your car dealer telling you that you can't legally drive a Lamborghini since they go 185 MPH and the speed limit is only 60 MPH. The power supply's current rating (similar to the car's maximum speed) is the most it can provide, not what it must do. Just as a Lamborghini can drive within the posted speed limit (not that's why you got it, however), a 800 ma power supply will properly provide 500 ma since it's well within the maximum limit it was designed to provide.

I suspect that your friendly Radio Shack sales person was outside of their comfort zone (since it wasn't a cell phone) and told you some BS to cover up their original mistake. Most likely they sold you a bad adapter, wrong 'Adapta Plug', or had something set wrong. The lower power adapter probably worked since it was set correctly and used the right accessories.

The good news is that it now works for you, so all should be fine regardless!

That is what I thought. I would just think they would give them some type of training in electronics or at lease show them how to read the directions. But like you said they want to be specialize in the cell phone department. But I am now very pleased.

Is the tip on your wall wart plugged in to the correct polarity?

Local Radio Shack sold me their 800mA adapter with the "C" plug and it works as expected on my 106.
How does the "B" plug differ from "C" and will my unit spontaneously combust at some point using "C"? :D

As I mentioned, Doug is the resident expert on RS. He's spent many years with them and knows their products back and forth. I suspect the "B" jack may fit the center power pin in the jack just a little snugger. The "C" adapter however was the one RS recommended in their 106 accessories list.
Doubt either will hurt your scanner at all.

Make sure the adapt plug (+) positive side is lined up with the word tip. Thats usually is a common mistake. That is how the polarity works.

I have Pro 106 an enercell and have the adapt a plug (+) positive side lined up with word tip.

The B is a tighter fit I believe.

I have the C and my unit has not spontaneously combusted knock on wood.
