I'm trying to scan railroad frequencies with my 106 and find so many birdies it won't scan - keeps hanging. Anyone else with this problem?

Something in your post just does not make sense. First of all what is the freq range you are trying to scan for railroad activity? Secondly where do you have the squelch set? And last, what is your definition of a "birdie".

If any of those railroad freqs are PBX channels, you will have to lock them out or they will disrupt your scanning. Mine scans the 160 MHZ freqs just fine.

A birdie is internally generated.
Take your antenna off. If the signal is still there it's a birdie.

My radio scans the RR search range completely w/o stopping if the antenna is disconnected.

When I connect the antenna the radio can't scan very far before stopping.
This is because it is hearing noise from computers and computer monitors in close proximity. (these are not birdies but are spurs or noise signals from other equipment)

Remote or external antenna is called for.

I thought it made perfect sense, but...

First - Freq range is VHF AAR FCC assigned railroad channels (approx. 160-161MHz)

Second - Squelch is set a little past when the radio mutes, pretty much standard

Last - for this note, I meant an interfering non-broadcast carrier, although as pointed out last night, technically a 'birdie' is internally generated.

I will try the antenna removal idea to determine source next time I listen (had a brain cramp and didn't think of that!)

Thanks all...
