I am not sure about the specifics of the system you want to program. It would help if you provided the state, county, city info and perhaps a link to the data in our database.

Regardless, the best way to program these scanners, especially when programming trunked radio systems, is to use software on your computer. Get the USB cable so your PC can communicate with the scanner. I use WIN97 software to program that model, but there are others.

Additionally, if you are using software, you might find another member in your area that already has that system programmed and they can share their file with you.

Are you trying to program manually or using software? Your best bet is to use software and the RS cable to connect your scanner to your computer.

I looked up MSP which I assume is Massachussetts State Patrol. Troop H is in the Boston area. It is a Motorola Type II Smartzone.

If you are programming your scanner manually, then start with page 36 of the manual. You can disregard the fleetmap stuff as it doesn't apply to a type II system.

The RR database notes their can also be Apco 25 programming with the MSP. This is digital and cannot be monitored with your 163. But the database indicated that for now Troop H is analog.

I hope this helps. You might also post this in the Massachussetts forum and those in your area can assist you better than I can.

In regards to open or closed mode, that is up to you. Open will allow you to hear any talkgroups that are active whereas closed allows you to hear the talkgroups you programmed. My guess though is you want to program Troop H talkgroups, set it to close and then you won't pick up other talkgroups that are active within that site's frequencies.

All of the MSP communications are in the 800 MHZ band so it is not really uhf low or high.

You need to figure out what sites you want to program and go from there. Being I'm not from Massachussetts you are better off aksing in the state forum to get a better idea of what exactly you want to program.

I've had nothing but problems with my Pro-163 with respect to setting it up for trunking. Anything that is programmed into the talk group ID's will not stop the scan and lock on the audio. If the system is left open then it will lock onto virtually anything and work fine but if you want to have a handful of talk group IDs to listen to and not the entire system it's just a pain. I've programmed it by hand and using Win97 software with no difference in the performance. Had the unit flashed to the current CPU firmware the other day and still no change.

Is there someone who would be willing to look at my Win97 file and tell me what I'm missing?
