Welcome to RadioReference! It is strongly suggested that you have a programming cable (RS #20-546), software and become a "Premium Subscriber". If your 164 doesn't have the latest firmware and requires it for Suffolk County, you'll have to update.

It appears that Nesconset is located in Suffolk County. Here is the info on their system:

Suffolk County Trunking System, Suffolk County, New York - Scanner Frequencies

You will need to do the following:
1 - Set the system type to "MOT" - appears you have done that.
2 - Enter the two primary (RED) and two secondary (BLUE) control channel frequencies. Those four are all you will need.
3 - Set the MOT system to "open".

This is all in the manual, but if you are new to trunking, the manual is a headache. There is also an "Easier to Read" manual for the PRO-164. Just search Google for it. I'm doing this entirely from memory, so please question anything that doesn't appear correct. Good luck and have fun.

You have 851.36250, 851.41250, 851.68750, and 852.28750 set so when you press the "MAN" button and step through the channels, the display shows "MXYYMO ZZZ.ZZZZZ" where X=Bank number, Y=Channel Number, and Z=one of the above frequencies?

When you press PROG then TRUNK, the middle line of the display reads "Motorola TGID#XX" where XX is some number from 00 to 29?

thats confusion what ywrote...i dunno

Try it manually.
To program a Bank for TRUNKING:
1. Press PROG, then press TRUNK.
2. Press FUNC, then use an UP or DOWN ARROW to select a bank.
3. Repeatedly press MODE to select a trunking mode (Motorola).
4. Press PROG.
5. Enter the first freq., 851.3625, press ENTER.
6. Press PROG or the UP ARROW to advance to the next channel.
7. Enter the next freq., 851.4125, press ENTER.
8. Enter the next freq., 851.6875, press ENTER.
9. Enter the next freq., 852.2875, press ENTER.
Now press SCAN.
You should start to see all active Talk Group IDs (TGs).

There are two trunking modes, OPEN and CLOSED:
OPEN lets you hear ALL active TGs
CLOSED lets you hear ONLY the TGs you have put into the SUB-BANKS.
“–” appears for CLOSED mode and “+” appears for OPEN mode under the channel number.
To set OPEN or CLOSED mode for a bank:
1. Press MAN.
2. Use the UP or DOWN ARROW to select a bank.
3. Press FUNC then •/DELAY.

PROGRAMMING the Sub-Banks (Saving Talk Group IDs)
Each of the 10 banks contains 5 sub-banks that each hold 30 Talk Group IDs.
To define a Talk Group ID:
1. Press PROG, then press TRUNK to enter the ID program mode.
2. Press FUNC, then use UP or DOWN ARROW to select a bank.
3. Repeatedly press MODE to select a trunking mode (Motorola,
EDACS, or LTR).
4. Repeatedly press TRUNK to select the sub-bank.
5. Press UP or DOWN ARROW to select the location where to store the Talk
Group ID.
6. Use the number keys to enter the Talk Group ID:
7. Press ENT.

What DickH was trying to help with, is manually programming the 164 in Trunking Mode. Follow what he wrote for you. It will make a difference. If you've never programmed a trunking scanner before, you will lose hair until the light comes on in your head:D Using software is only as good as entering the frequencies there by hand. Have you tried the Win97 software from www.starrsoft.com, or are you using something else? Asking in the NY state forum might help a little too.
HTH,
Larry
