I just aquired a 2005, when I fired it up lastnight for the first time, I hear heavy static.
It doesnt matter at what volume setting its at, even at the lowest with the squelch turned low, I still hear very loud static. Imagine your stereo speakers shorted, thats what it sounds like. Ive checked all the possibles on it to see if there was something shorting it out, but no luck.

Anyone run into a similar issue like this either with the 2005 or anything else?

You maybe describing a dirty volume control, if it has setting for a long while it may pay and clean the control with some tuner cleaner.

My PRO 2006 has a very scratchy volume control, esp. if it hasn't been used in a couple weeks. Tuner cleaner is a good idea but first just try quickly moving the volume from min to max a bunch of times. 99% of the time this will cure my 2006. Just do this either with the set unplugged or with 'phones plugged in (it's really annoying otherwise).

I'd do the same with the squelch control. Speaking of, does the static change if you crank the squelch up all the way to the right?

I'll try the tuner cleaner more to see if that helps. Ive tried moving the volume knob around a bunch and tweaking the squelch control to no avail.

Well, a little more tuner cleaner and working the knob around a bit cleared the issue up.

Thanks to all that posted advice.
