Yes you can, version data doesn't clone from 1 to the other.
Are you sure your 2096 is CPU 1.4? If it is, the previous owner must have sent it in for CPU the latest Upgrade

Could be, we've seen a recent post on Pro-96 Yahoo group that CPU's 1.5 for the 96 and 1.4 for the 2096 were available in the parts department at service centers and soon to be released in newer scanners. You may have one of the first with this firmware.mike6454 said:

I have a new pro-2096 and it tracks p-25's totally AWESOME!!!!
I also have a BC796D,and 2-BC996's and a 1yr old pro-96.
and the 2096 blows both Uniden models away at least in my case.
im in the Mpls/StPaul area.
I did buy it from an ebay seller selling new radio's
i cloned my 2096 from my pro96 bad news,
took it into Radioshack they cloned it with a new 2096 awesome results however a ebay lesson learned for mikey,and i will share with the rest of you:
these ebay power sellers tell you that you can take any new 2096 bought from them into your local radioshack for warranty repairs-FALSE!!
In my area the only reason that the manager cloned my 2096 was because he felt sorry for me.He stated Radioshack will not honor warranty's from ebay sales and this guy i bought from also sells a 3yr extended warranty had i paid for that im not too sure how that would work,nothing real clear in writing
when i emailed the sellers that i had tech.issues with the pro-2096 he did offer my money back and to reimburse me for my shipping costs to him,
so i did get a new 2096 for about 100.00 cheaper than in store but no warranty,
overall im ok with that based on the improved performance on recieving p-25s.
I also cloned my pro-96 from the 2096 and the performance on that radio also improved.
