Anyone here a PRO 2096 expert? I upgraded years ago when locals went to digital, but I have never been able to really program it. I was told doing on the computer was very easy. Radio Shack sold me a CD
but it did not include any kind of cable and they couldn't tell me how to use it. They did refund my money.

I am taking another stab at it because I do miss listening, but still can't get it through my thick skull. I don't even see a place for the RS232 to USB cable (that I read about here) to connect to my radio.

Thanks for any direction.

Hey contenda and welcome to RR. Nice to meet you

I have never owned a 2096 but had a Pro 96 for several years and pretty certain that they program the same way. Let me start by saying it is a lot easier to program via a computer with software and a programming cable vs programming manually. I programmed mine with Win 96 and really liked it but believe there are some others out there that are also very good. I liked Pro 96 since it is pretty straight-forward. You will get a free 30 day trial when you download it and then if you want to continue using it after that you will need to purchase it. If you're programming conventional freqs they can just simply be typed in to each channel, however if you are trying to program a trunked radio system you will need to program the primary control channels (red frequencies) and the secondary control channels (blue frequencies) into the desired bank of the site you wish to monitor. If more than one trunked site's control channels is programmed into the same bank I noticed that if one site's signal is strong than it won't "track" the other site in that same bank very well. May I also add that if you obtain a premium membership you can simply "import" directly from the RR database which will save you a lot of time. Also with regards to the programming cable my Pro 96 used the mono adapter plug that came with it to import from the computer to the scanner and I'd say that the 2096 uses the same one.

Thanks for the quick answer. Yes, I was having trouble with the trunkiing. If I subscribe (which I was thinking of doing anyway) I would have to have the WIN software in addition? RIght?
I don't remember a cable coming with my scanner. I will have to see if I can find that box. Where in the heck would it plug in?

Your very welcome and yes you will have to download the software in order to program from your computer. You may need to purchase the programming cable separately. I know with the GRE 500 and 600 they come with the programming cable. And as mentioned above the programming cable will plug into your PC/IF jack on the scanner.

Hi Chad, how are you this evening?

I got the calbe and WIN96 and managed to download from the scanner. I just tinkered with what was in there since I don't really understand trunking, and the trunked police was coming in anyway. I guess I will have to keep reading and tweek. Thanks so much for your help!

You are very welcome contenda. Glad to hear that you got some freqs downloaded from the DB to the scanner. I guess now it will just be personal preference on how you want to organize your freqs and what you wish to monitor.

Just read the 2 articles linked in the Overview section of the article linked below (anything in blue is a link). One of the links there goes to a PDF file, for which you will need Adobe Acrobat or one of the popular utilities to read

Trunked Radio Systems - The RadioReference Wiki
