I have been scanning for several years and have always used Uniden scanners. I'm currently using a BC92XLT. The area where I live is 95% analog (Schuylkill County PA) I recently purchased a Pro-82 new from radio shack and I am very dissapointed in it's sound. The speaker is loud and clear but the static is very anoying, even adjusting the squelch doesn't help. Also the antenna fits loose and can be moved back and forth when attached. I attached another antenna from one of my unidens and the fit is the same, still loose. I also have a pro-2018 base which works perfect and I like it alot. Are all Pro-82's like this? I was going to purchase a new GRE PSR-100 but if it's anything like this Pro-82 I thing I'll pass. If anyone could help answer some of my questions it would be very much appreciated. I like simple to use and program radios and since my area is conventional, I'm not ready for a trunking scanner just yet.

Sounds like the antenna connector is loose on the radio and the wire from the antenna to circuit doard is loose also. This is a fairly easy fix for the user or you could have the store send it in. This radio does have a 1 year warranty.

I have the PSR-100 and my antenna is loose as well, not at the BNC to the radio but at the antenna to the BNC, it is annoying but is not really a problem. Some guys put a rubber O-ring under their antenna, I tried that but it made it to hard to get the antenna on and off.

I have not had any problems with static on my PSR-100 so as the other poster said you may have a loose connection in the radio.

Thank you for the replies. The Antenna to the BNC is where it is loose. I assume it is normal on these radios then. Im just not use to this, as all my unidens have a nice tight fit. The pro-82 has a lot of back ground hiss on many channels which can be annoying. I believe it is bacause the radio is very sensative and pulls in distant frequencies well. I bought this radio because of all the great reviews it has on the Radio Shack site. Thanks again for you replies and help.

If you do not have hiss on strong local signals then I would say you are OK. Hiss on weak signals is to be expected....

Fredg, can you tell me about your PSR-100? Pros and cons with this radio? I really like the way it looks and I am considering buying one. Also where did you get it from?

I really like my PSR-100, here are a couple of links to some reviews I wrote:

PSR-100 Review: http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93041

PSR-200 Review: http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95407

As you may know these are pretty simple basic scanners, but they work well. I like the "clone" feature as well, I can clone the programming for my PSR-100 and PSR-200 in seconds (I think the Pro-82 and Pro-2018 do the same thing)

The only cons I can see are the floppy antenna, and when the radio turns on it displays a message on the screen spelling out a letter at a time "Welcome Scanning Reciever" it only take a few seconds but I just as soon it not go through that each time.

The belt clip is kind of "creaky" as well and I wish there was a case for it.
