Over the past year my pro-93 has been developing a very noticeable high pitched squeal on recceiving.

Now yesterday, I turned it on and it didn't receive anything. I tuned to a weather freq and it received... but the received signal was garbled with a VERY loud high pitched squeal.

Has the front end been cooked?

Also.... how much would it cost for repairs thru RadioShack? Either I fix it or replace it with a PRO-97.

There goes the Dayton Budget :(

THanks!

John.

Scanner works now sporadically... sometimes it works, sometimes not.

Perhaps an alignment?

Any ideas folks?

These scanners have a lot of voltage converters in them. That's how it can supply so many different voltages from one set of batteries .. and regulate the voltages as the batteries discharge. It is just a hunch, but it sounds like one of the charge-pump type regulators is not working correctly. It could be a filter capacitor or a myriad of things. That would explain getting a squeal. Of course there are lots of other things (interference, untuned circuit, etc) that can do it too.

Either way this is not a user serviceable problem. I've got the '92, '93, '95 & '97 models and love them all. The '95 is my favorite for quality reception. The '97 is my favorite for "features" - the backlight, backlit keypad, DC/CTSS tone decoding, Signal Stalker II, etc. As long as you do not need digital, nor will be affected by rebanding anytime soon; I'd definitely go with a PRO-95 or PRO-97. The '97s have been on sale at the Shack lately - $149 and I've seen some stores on eBay selling them for $110 (brand new). You'd have to find a '93 or '95 used. I just bought a semi-defective '93 for $20 and a couple more '95s for about $60 off eBay (I plan to give my kids each one).

Good luck.
