Hey Folks,

So the other day I took on the not so difficult challenge of installing a discriminator tap in my pro-95. It works great with just one hitch. It only seems to send audio to my computer when the PC interface cable is also connected. I find this to be quite strange. I'm just starting to learn about "scanner guts" but my feeling is that the PC interface doesn't have much to do with audio. Any ideas?

Perhaps a bad ground on the d-tap? Check for continuity between the chassis/ring/jack nut/whatever ground and the antenna ground. Chances are that the PCIF is providing the ground, thus completing your circuit.

I installed a tap on a 95,96,and 97 useing this page
http://www.naturalgfx.com/pro97_discriminator.htm
the 95 and 96 were almost identical the 97 is a little different but use the same steps.
Also if you plan to drill a hole in your scanner for the new jack I recomend putting it in the back of the scanner.Reason is you may accidently plug in the wrong plug to the wrong jack.

On the 97's I put them on the side and now i wish I had put them in the back.

PC interface? Do you mean slicer or sound card?

Probably not. If he's just trying to send audio, then it would be going direct to the PC's soundcard. The 93/95, along with a slew of other radios, have a PC/IF.

So with this tap and one of the softwares on that link, if I find the Control on a EDACS network it will tell me the LN order and freq?

EDACS decoders won't show freqs, just the # of LCNs in the system. If you yourself find the freqs, you can input them into the decoding software and it will show what's active.

Darn. Pro96com for the 96 will show all the freq that belong to the control and shows the talk groups, I was just hoping it would have done sorta the same thing.

the LNs are not bad but it is fun finding those freq that belong to the LN

Bingo! Thanks Joe, it was indeed a problem with my ground. One I re-soldered it my audio came in with no problems.

hummn, That is a great idea, I wish I had thought of that! Oh well next time.

Thanks to everyone for the quick response and helpful insight. Now that I have the D-Tap all squared away I think I might be taking on the challenge of creating a data slicer.

Thanks again,

J.
