On the PC board next to the part there is usually a component designator in white ink.

If the thin' that you are describing is the thin' that I thin' you are thinking about then I thin' that there should be a designator like "L4" or "L14." Using that designator you can check the parts list and find out what the part is and buy a new one.

It looks to me like the red thing is the tuning slug in a tunable coil and even if you replace the coil, the radio will have to be adjusted with the new part to work right.

Since you don't seem to know about component designators, and don't recognize that the red thing in the square thing is a tuning slug for a coil, you'd probably be better off sending the radio back for repair.

Learning electronics is good. But this is not a very good way to start. (too complex)

If you're refering to the slotted + above the box next to TP 5, that would be T2 (GRJ-F863).

How on earth did you do that? The shield should have been soldered securely to the board.

If he's referring to the red circle with the cross with the silver box around it that is a coil not a pot.

As stated earlier, it's a part that needs tuned. The radio will need to be sent in for repair and alignment.

He was tuning it when he broke it.

Ought to order two of them. (just in case) Might get lucky and not break the next one and maybe luck into the right adjustment. Worst case would be to adjust it so that it overloads some other component in the radio.

The Pro-96 parts list that Radio Shack ought to be able to bring up the part number for T2 if they sell it. Maybe fmon's GRJ-F863 number is the RS part number.

Watch for this radio turning up on eBay shortly.....

Because It wasn't picking up the p25 system vary well comparied to same set up on another pro96.

So even if you get the repair part installed the radio wouldn't be working properly, right?

Maybe you should consider sending it in for repair. I fix a LOT stuff myself but sometimes I have to defer to the people who have the information and tools.
