If you're saying the battery compartment was so hot that there was actual melting of the plastic, it is defective and should be returned. My 97 has rechargables in the yellow holder and it's on 24/7. The battery compartment never gets more than warm and I get about 9 hours on the 2100 mAh batteries all the time. I think the whole thing about charging the batteries outside the radio is a bunch of hooey unless you just want an extra set available. My 97 works just fine as a battery charge.

I would carry it back and get exchange or refund. If purchase store balks. Be nice but you get another 97 for same cost. You don't, then kick some RS tail. Free shipping, whatever. Even if you erred, get a new unit. What brand recharges were they I'll ask?

I agree with ya SAR2401 to some degree but once you go wireless............Have yet to purchase a QUALITY recharge/conditioner unit but I regard OTS brands a value to date for me. Forgot my coupon tonight or I'd bought another 4 pack. Put away my wall wart and haven't ever used the cig adapter. Just how I roll with mine. Keep a speed loader (extra batts)(work, always on, etc) with me though. Grab and go, even if it's only to the garden. Guilty, I'm an addict.

SAR2401 made a good point . if you use regular alkaline batterys use the black battery holder yellow for rechargeable.
That's why the yellow holder has a sticker on it that says "WARNING: USE ONLY FOR REHARGEABLE BATTERIES"

My 1st 97 that I bought two years ago did the same thing in less than two hours with a charger that I also bought from radio shack it got so hot and leaked battery acid all over my laptop that was sitting beside it took the 97 back and it has worked fine for two years now and have learned to live live with the discoloring that was done to my laptop.

Because you have a defective scanner like he does?

Because I prefer to have the doubt instead of testing it. Besides, I go handheld very often, so I prefer to have it ready for taking it.

Wait a second, I don't get that second part. Doesn't the pro-97 act as a charger when you plug it in with rechargeable batteries in it? If so, what would be the advantage to using a seperate charger over the internal charger (besides this specific problem)? And how would this affect the portability of it at all?

I need to plug it out and then leave, sometimes if I have to rush to something O just grab it and leave.

And my external charger charges in 15-30 mins.

What was the voltage rating on the charger you were using and how many milliamps was it?
