Pro 07 Prob

As someone else mentioned, the brother 2055 had the same problem. One of my two 2055's which were purchased at the same time and bear the same date code did exactly what you described happened with the pro 97.

I would just call it a day and send it into radio shack to get it fixed.

FYI The other 2055 and my pro 97 have worked fine and they were all purchased about two years ago.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays!

I dunno, at $149.99 brand new it seems foolish to send it out. I think it's $100.00 for RS to just look at it and send it out isn't it? Less we forget about parts costs / shipping costs / labor costs , tax and everything else. Even if they fix it for the flat $100, for another 50 bucks I would rather have a brand new one and hang onto the old one for parts! But thats just my $00.000002 !

Yanno, I wanted to say that, but I was worried about the lashings I would get on here! lol.. oh well!

No lashings from here. I did try that actually, about three times (reminiscent of days gone by!), but nada.

I appreciate everyone's ideas thusfar, and before I decide to ship it off, or just write it off, will let this post ride a while longer. I am not in a hurry as I have plenty of scanners (evidenced by my signature). Someone further down the line might hit on the answer to this problem.

PRO-97 LCD Display

Someone earlier mentioned they thought there is a display controller. The display is 4 rows x 16 characters each (64 characters) x a typical 35 segments each. That's 2240 segments to be connected to a controller - typically 95 connections! I'm sure the controller is 'chip on glass' and basically part of the display.

This looks goofy, but the numbering on the 18 connections to the display are exactly reversed with the numbering on the PCB/connector. Here is what you should see on the connector CN202: 1) 3.5; 2) 3.0; 3) 1.1; 4) 5.5; 5) 1.9; 6) 7.5; 7) 2.0; 8) 6.0; 9) 4.8; 10) 3.7; 11) 2.3; 12) 1.2; 13) 0; 14) 3.2; 15) 3.5; 16) 3.5; 17) 3.5; 18) 3.5

There's really very little to go wrong except for the connections and the display itself.

Good luck

Well my thoughts all along have been that the display, for whatever reason, just failed. While the connections are a possibility, I would have to say that is not the case as it was working when put on the shelf and then didn't when it was turned on two months or so later. Appreciate the info on the connections, just to rule that out, I will check them later.

It's $20 for RS to look at it, and that is applied to the repair cost if you choose for them to fix it.

Whoever told you $100 was way off.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the pointer to mods.dk. I should've thought to check there but hadn't. And also on the lower cost for RS to check it out. Will look into the mod first and go the service route if that doesn't work. Happy new year.

Here is the fix, from Mods.dk http://www.mods.dk/view.php?ArticleId=3831
Hope this helps.

Thanks a bunch Eric. That did the trick! Though my older eyes make it more difficult to work with the small components nowadays, I was able to get it done. The worst part was getting the ribbon cable back into the connector. But all is well, and hopefully it will not occur again. Best 73...
