Pro 97 help-hope its not a dud from e-bay

I just got my pro 97 in the mail today. Got some new batteries and turned it on and turned up the vol and the squelch. I hear a soft humm in the background but not the loud squelch sound i usually hear from my bc. I think it has the upgraded antenna because its telescopic with nine sections and a big black thing in the middle. As far as getting it to work, I cleared the memory and reinitalized it as per the manual. I cant get the weather to come in. When I first turn it on I see the screen says 0123456789 pri scanning up... and bank numbers. no sound.
Did I buy a DUD?

It doesn't pick up weather and if you open the squelch all the way you get no open squelch sound either. I think you may have bought one with the bad the bad squelch potentiometer problem. It's a known problem in some Pro-97s.

Had this exact issue with the first 97 I bought a few months ago. I had to go in and exchange it a few hours later for a working one.

Bad PRO-97

It sounds like the antenna you have is a VHF antenna and is not the stock antenna. The stock rubber antenna does a good job on all bands. Now if you ONLY want to hear VHF, that is great. But if you want to hear 800 MHz for example, the antenna is probably not the best one.

Regarding your lack of sound; I agree with the previous post and the problem is most likely a defective squelch potentiometer. Unfortunately you have to replace the squelch/volume/on/off as well.

Thanks for the answers. I sent the faulty scanner back but the guy. He says he sold it as is and he won't give me my money back. But in his sales description he also says "item can be retuned in 7 days if not satisfied" and "100% satisfaction guaranteed". So I think he's got some 'splanin to do.
