hello, i see you can get a pro 97 for $80 at overstockdealz and i am seriously considering this purchase, i was just wondering if anyone can comment on how it performs on the low band, here in nebraska the state patrol uses the 42 mhz range, and i can NEVER hear anything with my pro 76, my pro 83, or my cobra sr900, i even purchased the radio shack telescopic antenna, it made a huge difference in both vhf hi and uhf but not a bit of difference on the low band,

so, anyone??

It all depends on the signal strength when it comes to low band. But I have always had great success with ALL bands on the 97!! But then again, the low band signals in my area are strong!

The CHP is also on low band I use my '97 when mobile to pick them up. The real key though is a good antenna - one designed for low band. This is especially true in a vehicle. Don't expect the stock rubber antenna inside a vehicle to do all that great. Put a low band antenna outside and you'll be good to go.

I used to have a Pro-97

I have a 5/8 Wave VHF Antenna, on an NMO Trunklip mount and it worked great.

oh...was monitoring the MSHP (42mhz range also).

Your best bet is any antenna up fairly high, on your roof or on your air conditioner or I could go on forever with or's. Any decent scanner antenna will do as long as it specs out to work on 30-50. Just a telescoping antenna won't do unless you are close to a station transmitting. Outside and high is best, just get it outside.

You'll be amazed how well a proper antenna works for receiving lowband. For 42 MHz, an antenna about 67" will work well.

Or get the radio shack discone which works for all ranges. I used to pick up a lot of low band skip with it too. And it covers everything else as well :)
